As I mention in my lectures aboard the giant cruise ships: the area just a few miles inland from the port of Civitavecchia is a golden area still to be mined.
In a few years they expect a low cost airport to be built and then the word will be out: Try to visit the towns of Viterbo,Vetralla, Tuscania etc. before they are "discovered".
An amazing history, foreign connections and great, cheap wine and extra virgin olive oil . Background info, photos and articles on www.elegantetruria.com

Sorry, the previous message should read :
".. is a golden area yet to be mined" meaning that it is still unknown to the cruise ship crowds.
It is not for everyone, but is very much appreciated by those wanting to see the real Italy far from the crowds and heat of touristy big cities.

vetralla,

where exactly will the airport be? I keep reading "Viterbo" but can you pinpoint it more exactly?

Also, is it going to be for low-cost flights, or will it takes planes as big as FCO does?

poss:

Can you post anything about the ship's excursion to Tuscania? Do they publish a description?

"Heading north from Cit., you will enjoy the picturesque Etruscan countryside as you make your way to Tuscania.... Enjoy a guided walk through the narrow cobblestoned lanes... and take in the views of the surrounding countryside. Leaving Toscania, you will proceed to a local family-owned farmhouse producing olive oil, vegetables, biscuits, wine, and a variety of liquors. YOu will gain insight into the history of olive oil production and sample different varieties with bruschetta bread, tomatoes...."

Thanks for you interest, tuscanlifeedit.

I have the shore excursion leaflet in front of me: Costs per person range from 149$ (8:30-5 p.m.) to 74$ (2 p.m.-6 p.m) .
Far less would be a bus to Tarquinia, Tuscania and Vetralla - the Etruscan Triangle -to taste olive oil, eat in a local trattoria, wander the hilltowns or rent a car for an independent day of roaming and exploring. A perfect day out for those who have done some studying up on the area . If you are uncertain about driving yourself there is a local English speaking driver who works with the US embassy and knows the area www.noleggioconconducente.net
