Civitavecchia to Viterbo/Orvieto
 

We will be in Civitavecchia on a Monday, and have already spent a week in Rome recently. So we thought we would either go to Ostia Antica, Tarquinia or Cerveteri. Unfortunately, the ruins and tombs are closed on Mondays. So, now we are looking at going to either Viterbo or Orvieto. Is is possible to go there by bus directly? We'd want to leave around 8:30 and be back in Civitavecchia by 6:30. I've checked the trains but it seems like we'd have to go through Rome. Or is there something else that would be a nice day trip? Thanks!

Of the two places, I'd visit Orvieto over Viterbo as it is a much more interesting and picturesque hilltown. I don't think I would rely on public transportation when getting back to a cruise ship on time is involved. A taxi to either town from Civitavecchia will be very expensive. I would look into a private driver for the day. He could take you to Orvieto and also to Civita di Bagnoregio.
