Civitavecchia Port to Rome Central

We are traveling from our cruise ship port in Civitavecchia to Rome for a few days. Is there anything between the cities that we should hire a driver to tour which extend our trip or do we just do the straight shot to Rome? We only have 3 days in Rome and want to make the most of it; which track do we take?

I would suggest that you go to www.cruisecritic.com and ask that question. Click on boards. Find your cruise line and ask that question there as I think you would be more successful.

Thanks Katie2...I will do just that

TexasAggie Aug 17th, 2006 04:45 PM

Do you have a lot of interest in ancient ruins? You might be able to have your driver detour through Ostia Antica and/or Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli.

P.S. Although with only three days in Rome, those sights might be best saved for another longer trip. Rome is an amazing city with an overwhelming amount of worthy sights.

Hello Wildman, my thoughts are like TexasAggie, Rome has so much to see I would spend my time in Rome and not take time to do sidetrips this visit. Do enjoy both your cruise and your time in vibrant and exciting Rome!!

skye2006 Aug 17th, 2006 05:49 PM

Go straight to Rome I've done the trip at least 10 times and there's nothing to see. It's about an hour a bit to get to Rome

TexasAggie,,
Thanks for the imput, sounds like sound advice froma guy from College Station.

Wildman Aug 17th, 2006 06:41 PM

Loveitaly,
Thanks for the reply on the Aggie, I agree that it makes sense to see Rome for the main events.

I understand it is very dificult to get a taxi to take you to the train station from the cruise port. They want the fare to the airport instead. The Cruise Co. offers a shuttle to the airport for $67 per person. Then you still have to get into the city. Cost for the train from Civitavecchia to Rome is very reasonable. Any recommendations on the most reasonable and time saving way to get from the port to City of Rome?

Dukey Aug 30th, 2006 12:27 AM

In my experience the ships will often run a free shuttle service from the place where the ship is docked to the ENTRANCE to the port area.

From there it is about a ten-minute walk to the RR station. Fares to Rome on the train run about 4-5 Euros last time I took it (a year ago).

Rail would be "the most reasonable" in terms of low cost. Are you willing to do the trip to the RR station is the real question here.

travelinow Aug 30th, 2006 07:52 PM

Dukey,
We are willing to walk 10 minutes if we can get very good directions from the port to the RR station....hoping we don't have to hop over tracks and climb fences or anything crazy. This will be the last leg of a 3 week trip and cruise. I just hate to give the cruise Co more $ since we can manage a 10 minute walk! So can anybody help with directions from the cruise ship port in Civitavecchia to RR station? ...then we're on to Termini and can walk to our hotel. Thanks

Dukey Aug 31st, 2006 12:37 AM

The directions: when you leave the port entrance you proceed straight down the street stretching out in front of you; the water will be to your right.

The train station will be on the other side of that street on your left once you come to it...hard to miss.

Wildman, what cruise are you going on? we are on the Oct. 5 Golden Princess sailing Venice to Civitavecchia. If by the wildest chance, you are too, we could have a mini-fodors gtg.

travelinow Aug 31st, 2006 08:01 PM

Thank you Dukey. We really appreciate it. Sounds very simple, just a straight shot. Hopefully it's a pretty safe area too.

Dukey Aug 31st, 2006 11:41 PM

It is TOTALLY safe IMO...the issue will be getting from the ship to the port entrance.

Have a wonderful trip.

With a little research you should be able to hire car service both ways and they will wait for you! Although, if there is just two or less it's not worth the extra $. We hired a car and it was 68euro each way.
