Civita anyone?
Has anyone traveled to Civita and it's neighboring village? Rick Steves says it's his favorite hilltown.

Sure, 3 times. What is your question?
Rick has not seen all of the hill towns. |
I stayed near there in May. You can see the photo I took at
http://www.travelswithdiane.homestea...e23Umbria.html My arthritis kept me from climbing up, but it was beautiful even from "down below." We stayed at a great agriturismo in Orvieto. |
We visited from Orvieto in 2000. Loved our time there (about 2 hours)and the great views and photo ops. My friends thanked me over and over for putting in on our itinerary. One of the more unique towns, but certainly one of many beautiful ones!

I have friends who have a house in Civita de Bagnoregio and we went to go visit them a summer or two ago.
Absolutely do not stay in the guesthouse/hotel mentioned in Rick Steve's book about Civita. the hotel that is the actual village. I have backpacked throughout Europe and Asia, and it is the worst place that I have ever stayed. However, the charming and romantic hotel at the base of the mountain in the town, hotel Pucci is delightful. Pucci is a former model and flight attendent. She serves a wonderful breakfast and could not be more delightful. The innkeeper however was the rudest most inhospitable person I have ever met. Also, my friends say the best gelato is in the town below Civita near the turn coming into town near the gas station. We tried some and it is delicious. Civita itself has some great little restaurants in it where they cook everything over the open hearth. And the bruschetteria is great as well and will sell you their own bottled olive oil. It's delicious. |
Thanks all~
I was just looking for additional info on Civita. Bob(the navigator), you seem to question Rick Steves' calling Civita a great hilltown? With it being fairly remote, is it worthwhile if we have a total of 4 days in the hilltown area? |
Patiboo,
I think it depends on where you are staying and how far it would be to drive to Civita. You can spend just as much time as you wish. It might be that your base town offers other towns nearby that would be a better use of time. |
No, I love Civita but it is not close to any other of the typical Tuscan hill towns. My comment is really about Rick who avoided the other hill towns until recent years. Get a map--read some guide books other than Ricks---put pins the map and decide from that.
