All kinds of trains nearly every hour ranging from 2.5 to 3 hours between Civit.. and Orvieto with one change at Termini. Don't make it complicated. Termini is fine>
IME Termini is hectic and airport trains come in on a platform that is practically in another station - to me it would be easiest to make a simple change at Tuscolana - a small station and a Tiburtina - much much smaller and easier to figure out than Termini.
And best of all it is all regional trains and thus cheaper than taking the expensive Leonardo Express into Termini. Times are just as quick - nearly the same via either route.
No Termini not only is more expensive it seems but IME muchmore confusing on changing trains no matter how nice a light one tries to paint on that.

That has not been the case for a year or two. The Leonardo arrives/departs the regular tracks (#24 usually).

You haven't read this thread. The OP is not taking the Leonardo Express. You are only adding a layer of confusion to the thread by throwing these things in when they don't pertain.
The OP will likely take a regional train from Civitavecchia (2 per hour - 5€) to Termini instead of the much less frequent Freccia fast trains (a few per day - 9-15€).

bourbon - I was getting mixed up - thinking they were coming from the airport - brain freeze so that changes my take - still I would avoid Termini at all costs if I were a novice traveler and change at the other two stations.

Wow, as always so much wonderful information. Just booked Orvieto hotel for October. I feel more confident based on your reviews. I have however decided to arrive at the port the night before. I booked a working ranch hotel near the port.
