City of Heroes
Here's where we stand in New York City tonight.

Shortly before 4:00 this afternoon an announcement went out that basic rescue worker supplies were needed--refreshments, cold cuts, and so forth--at the Jacob Javits Center and the two piers that are centers for the relief effort. Six hours later TV reporters are broadcasting a plea to stop bringing contributions in for now, as "they have more than they need".

What you have to understand is that this is a city whose citizens travel by mass transit. We don't have cars, and at the moment to some extent we don't have roads. The tons of food, clothing, linen, sundries, dog and cat food (pets are New Yorkers, too, and we love 'em!) and so forth that have been taken to the shelters and distributions centers have arrived one shopping bag at a time, taken there by people who arrived by foot, subway or bus.

To those who say, "We may be down, but we're not out," I have a reply. We're not down, baby. We are out there, we are strong, and we are here for each other.

And to everyone in every corner of the planet who has been here for us this week with love, comfort and support, this: We could not have done this without you. Thank you all.
