The problem with Rome and maps is, the streets change names often and there are so many of them that I personally have never found anything less than a huge fold out map to be entirely accurate. Just me...I also use Google Earth in advance to plot paths to places I know are tucked out of the way.

Emailing your hotel at this point will yield nothing more than a souvenier waiting for you upon your return. It isn't just across town...it takes a while to get mail delivered over an ocean.

The maps that are free at any Rome McDonalds are perfectly adequate and very detailed for Rome - i always have these and i'm an inveterate walker - extremely good maps and have sights pinpointed on them

Basically just a Golden Arches label on some Italian produced map.

Florence all hotels and the tourist office in the train station have similar free maps or for a pittance

You do not need expensive maps that may be actually too detailed IME

The free McDonalds maps are in English by the way - the information not the streets which would be confusing and foolish.

The maps we are mentioning are not expensive and not confusing. I think it's a good investment since you will have them for years.

I agree - i always collect various maps and look at them years later.

IMO the McDonalds maps are as good as any.
