Cititavecchia to Rome train reservations

I was checking online for the cost of roundtrip train ticket Cititavecchia to Rome and see that there is an extra charge for a reservation. It that necessary, are the trains ever full. We would have to be sure we were back before our ship leaves port so could we possibly run into a problem if we didn't have a reservation? The round trip fare without a reservations is $50, is that about right.
I'm new at this posting and just posted this message to the wrong forum, so I'm sorry if someone is reading it twice.
Thanks

McSnadra-

I wonder where you get those prices? Are they for 1 person or 2? 1st class or 2nd class?
I looked at Trenitalia's website, from Civitavecchia to Rome one-way, even the most expensive Eurostar train is only €8,62 for 2nd class and €13,53 for 1st class. Double that for round trip.
If you take the slightly slower InterCity train (7 minutes slower), it is €6,97 for 2nd class and €9,30 for 1st class per person one-way.

McSnadra-

Also meant to add: there are also Regional trains, which are a bit slower (1hr 10mins) but are even cheaper.

There are about 2 regional trains every hour, and I don't think they have reservations.

The InterCity train runs every 2 hours, reservation is optional.

Between Civitavecchia and Rome, you don't need to take an Intercity train. It's a short journey! Simply get on the first Diretto or Regionale train (neither of which accept seat reservations). You'll also save money.
