Cities or islands within close proximity to Barcelona?
Travelling to Barcelona for 6 days next week. Can anyone please recommend some neabry towns or small villages that might be nice to visit? In the alternative, how much would it cost us to fly to menorca or mallorca if we book once we're in Barcelona?

You could go by train to Montserrat...which is a monastary situated atop of a mountain. The railroad station, Aeri de Montserrat, is across the road fromthe Cable Car which you will take to go up to the top. It is about an hour west of Barceloan by train.

Or you could go to a beach resort called Sitges down the coast from Barcelona.

I think you will find Barcelona has ample attractions itself. From Montjuic, to Tibidabo, you will get two views of the city from on High. You can go to Barcelonetta for great seafood dining, or walk the Las Ramblas. Or Passeig De Gracia for shopping. I thought it was a marvelous and stunning city.

Have fun.

Michael

The suggestions were almost identical to the places I went. I stayed 2 nights in Barcelona at a dump - Hostal Dali for the same price that I spent at a wonderful hotel in Girona! I spent a day trip to Montserrat and spent a night in Sitges (Hostal Paradelles (sp?)) before heading on to Montblanc and Poblet (monasteries). I headed to Girona (Hotel Peninsular), Figueras, then Roses (Hotel Monterrey - very nice) and Cadaques (very quaint, narrow streets, etc.) Back down to Sitges for 2 nights and day trips to Barcelona! But at the end, exhausted and culturally filled! Hostals were filled in most of Barcelona when I was there.
