Citavecchia

Hi - has anyone heard of/been to Citavecchia?

Thanks,
Monica

Yes, and yes.

Well no, actually.
Unless you mean Civitavecchia ... ?

In which case I can flog you the T-shirt ;)

What's your question?

Civitavecchia is a port with ferry services to Sardinia. It's also used by cruise ships as it's the nearest port to Roma. There are good train services from Civitavecchia to Roma.

This is the Port of ROME--for Cruise ships--It is about 2 hrs from ROME and smack in the middle of nowhere-

If you are joining a cruise, take either private car service or ships transfer--
There are no facilities ( bathrooms) at this port ( like you normally have in FLL or MIA)..and most ships do not let you on until way late-- like 3pm...

The Civitavecchia area is a good place to go exploring the Extruscan necropoli... sounds morbid perhaps, but well worth the trip. Also, I *think* that the Niki de Saint Phalle sculpture garden is close by. http://www.nikidesaintphalle.com/entrance.html It's really a wonderful experience.

Andy - have you booked your cruise on the Century yet?

Oh, and P.S. - MOST cruise ships visit Civitavecchia as opposed to embark or disembark. In those cases, I would advise taking the train into Rome. Termini is only an hour express ride from the port (not two, Andy).

Peter

Peter- I was on a BUS from the hotel in ROME to the cruise ship in Civittevechia-
it did take us 2 hours-you have to include loading up the cattle and getting them on the bus! Give me a break already....

WHILE the train may be faster and cheaper, a private car service is way more luxurious and PRIVATE.- Yes, it is more money-but it boils down to the exact same price as 2 people buying the ship's transfers....Been there, done that! OK.....

As far as embarking or disembarking-YES, it is an embarkation spot-WINDSURF!!! I was on the ship, for pete's sake( no pun intended)..We LEFT from ROME and ended up in NICE...

THE CLIPPER SHIP also embarks from ROME.

STOP getting on my case.. I DO know what I am talking about...

I've been to Civitavecchia as a port only on previous cruises. There is NOTHING there in my opinion....it's considered a place to get out of most likely head to Rome.

PumpkinEater Mar 5th, 2003 06:58 PM

Andy - for sure you know what you're talking about - no doubt, really.

You just don't read so good. I said "MOST" cruise ships don't embark, disembark from Civitavecchia. Its "mostly" a port stop for Rome. Those stopping there won't have luggage to transport, etc. They are looking for the fastest, cheapest way to get to what they really want to see - Rome. Ship's transfers aren't even an issue for most.

I thought you said you were on a bus? -but then you gave us this Richy Rich thing about loving the limo rides. Were you there more than once? Do you think the bus was more luxurious than a train? Was it worth spending an extra hour on the bus?

Peter

P.S. - have you booked your cruise on the Century yet?

andy Mar 5th, 2003 07:20 PM

Peter- yes- I have been there more than once...

No , the bus is not any more luxurious than the train- just easier to go with all the other people the first time we cruised from that port...

Yes, I do use the limoservice I have recommended.. A limo service does not mean a limosine in NYC standards--
they are Mercedes station wagonsand super comfortable...with A/C and not on a bus..which I am not crazy about, but will do under duress.... However, lugging my luggage on and off a train is not my idea of fun---esp.with a bad knee...

NOW- any other questions as to my life and travels...

And I answered your question on the cruise on the cruise board and see no reason to answer it again..

I do thank you for your help in trying to get the cruise though- and I am being serious..

Now please, end all this repartee and banter- as it does no one any good...

Thanks
