The Sorrento station of the Vesuviana is MURDER. There are lots of steps all over the place. The station itself is much elevated from the street.

another possibility - take one of the Eurostar trains that go to Pompeii, to the main Trenitalia station but not the Circumvesuviana then take a taxi to Sorrento - much close to Sorrento than naples and i suspose the Pompeii Trenitalia station is small and easily navigable though i have not been there myself

PalenQ: there is an ES that goes from Rome to Pompeii? I will check that out tonight. Thanks
Everyone: this discussion is invaluable. Thank you. |
Well folks - I stand corrected.
I thought I'd seen IC/ES trains run through the Circumvesuviana station occasionally - but evidently not ... Debbie/Pal - I don't think Pompeii FS from Rome is an option without changing. According to the Trenitalia site, only 2 or 3 trains daily go to Pompeii F.S directly (05.01, 19.45, 20.47). All the rest involve a change in Naples ... I'd suggest they go with the Marozzi idea. Assuming he can climb 3 steps onto the bus, it's relatively hassle-free and inexpensive. If they prefer train, they could arrange the usual transfer from Napoli Centrale by limo/taxi to Sorrento (- € 80-100). Sorrento-based limo companies include: www.tourofitaly.com www.francescomarrapese.com www.cuomonet.it www.seesorrento.com www.sorrento.it Hope this helps ... Steve |
tuscan - What is the itinerary and dates?
Steve - The southbound trains from Rome to Pompeii that don't involve changes are in the afternoon. There are 2-3 depending on day of travel (which we don't know). An ES at 19:45 (train #9379), and 2 ICPlus (trains # 527 and 1557)at an hour or so later. These trains stop at Naples, but don't involve a change. On the return from Pompeii there are very early trains - 6:01 ES (train # 9370) and at 6:52 ICplus (train #516). |
sounds like the bus option from Napolie Centrale is the best option in this case as trains to Pompeii go at inconvenient times.
|
Ky - You're right. But it means arriving in Sorrento late ...
Pal - The Marozzi bus service is from Rome. Steve |
that makes it even better - sorry i missed rereading that

Note on Circumvesuviana Sorrento station - there is an elevator that will take you to street level.
tuscanlifeedit - I hope your friends have a wonderful time! Nice of you to do this for them. |
Yes, I have used the elevator at Sorrento's train station, when I had heavy luggage and so many people were on the stairs. There are taxis and buses right in the lot of the station too, if he needs them to get to his hotel. Did he/you decide where he is staying in Sorrento?

"Well folks - I stand corrected.
I thought I'd seen IC/ES trains run through the Circumvesuviana station occasionally - but evidently not ..." Hi Steve, I think I know what you might be remembering :). Piazza Garibaldi only has 4 tracks, 2 of which it shares with the Metro. Perhaps that is what you recall seeing IC/ES trains and the Metro trains together there? The Metro and the Circumvesuviana trains look the same too me. I could never figure-out how they got the IC/ES trains below ground to the station and then back above ground in & thru downtown Naples? A tunnel I know :) but I wondered how and why would they build this *long* underground tunnel beneath a major city just for that 1 stop before continuing onward North or South. Easier to by-pass the city above ground and connect it to the main station via metro. Then I took it one day and realized that they just use the existing Metro tunnels to get in & out of the city :). Regards, Walter |
To Dayle-
You mean I've been busting my rump all these years and not noticing an elevator at the Sorrento staion. I'm gettin' old! |
Hate to say it Waldo, but yes. As you exit the train, it will be to your left at the far end of the hallway....buon viaggio!

'I think I know what you might be remembering :)'
Hi Walter - I think it must just have been one of my 'limoncello' moments. After a few they all look the same, don't they? That's my excuse anyway ;) Steve |
