Cinque Terre's "Path of Love" reopens

The walking path between Riomaggiore and Manarola will reopen in a few days after being closed for repairs for 12 years. Capacity will be controlled, and tickets are required.

Good news! Thanks, Jean. :)

It is scheduled to open 27 July (my birthday, btw). Is that perhaps why the trail reservation web page (the only one I have seen, anyway) at https://www.viadellamore.info/ shows that it is under maintenance with no anticipated fix date. ??

This is the authoritative website for all Cinque Terre paths, and other information. They still show the Path of Love closed, but it's not the 27th yet.

Thanks for that update. I've been waiting to hear on that. Figured there might be tickets required. Thanks for the info and link.

Some interesting additional reading on CNN:

Perhaps we can expect the curtain to remain closed on the reservation site until around 9 Aug, the first day nonresidents will be allowed on the trail.

Finally! The owner of our apartment in Manarola informed us that tickets for Via dell’Amore started just yesterday (8 Aug). We purchased our tickets today, along with our 3-day CT Hike+Treno passes! 100 spaces available every 15 minutes, 08:00-21:00.

Geez. Sounds like a Disneyland ride....

It’s a 1K walk, one way, from Riomaggiore to Manarola. Popular because it’s easy. More of a stroll. Closed for 12 years due to rockslides and the difficulty of stabilizing and rehabilitating the route, walking it is every bit as much a celebration of Italian pride and ingenuity as it is an opportunity for getting out on a seaside trail. No illusions here of getting away from it all on this particular stretch, but happy about the timing of its reopening.

Have a great trip!

I'd love to see a trip report when you get back. Many people have asked about this path in the past 12 years, and it would be nice to be able to refer them to a recent experience. Once, about 25 years ago, I saw the path from the sea. It was packed with visitors even then. From the sea they looked like a column of ants. I hope limiting the numbers serves to reduce the crowding.

Article in today's NYT about the reopening (shared)

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/11/w...smid=url-share

A quote: "When the Via dell’Amore closed 12 years ago, the area had been attracting some 870,000 visitors a year. Last year some four million people passed through. The local population numbers around 4,000. You do the math."

One hundred people spread over one kilometer... That's about one person every 30 feet, not figuring in the slow pokes and selfie stops.
