Cinque Terre worth the trip in Oct/Nov?
My husband and I are returning to Italy at the end of October. We will stay 4 days in Rome and then want to head somewhere within easy enough driving distance (3 or so hours) for a few days. Is Cinque Terre worth it that time of year? We're obviously not expecting sunshine and beach weather - we've done Italy this time of year before.
Any other suggestions where to go from Rome? We've done Tuscany, Florence and Assisi already. Thanks! |
If I'm not mistaken, I think the CT would be quite a bit further than a 3-hour drive from Rome... You might check your route on viamichelin.com. Otherwise, why not revisit Tuscany or explore more of Umbria? I can't wait until I have the opportunity. =) Good luck!

I know this is sacrilege but I wouldn't go out of my way to see CT. But then I've done once. It wasn't as great as I was anticipating. Rick Steves plays it out to be almost holy. I do admit it has lovely views but I would rather spend time in some hill towns in Umbria. Orivetto is close to Rome, head up toward Perugia for some great hill towns.

I would head south not north that time of year--I would do Taormina or Positano. You can fly to Catania in 1:15 and bus to Taormina in an hour.

I would do the Amalfi coast. Stay in Sorrento and daytrip to Positano, Amalfi, Pompeii.
Train from Rome to Naples / 2.25 hours Train (Circumvensuvian R.R.) Naples to Sorrento / 70 minutes No car needed. Just use SITA buses for trips to Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. Beats the heck out of the over-hyped, over-priced CT unless you like Zoos. Larry J |
