Maybe this is a stupid question, but who or what is Rick Steves? I've seen lots of references to the name, but have not heard of it before coming to this forum.

We used his 2004 book to plan our trip and found it very helpful. We also took it with us and used it a lot. The only thing was that I did not know his 2005 book was out before our trip and there was some info that had changed. Only screwed us up once but we muddled through.

Some people credit Rick Steves for the incredible popularity of Cinque Terre among American tourists, as he's been recommending the place highly. Indeed, his books are a great place to get tips about the area.

In general, I've found his books quite helpful, as they offer a lot of very practical tips for saving money and avoiding hassles and ripoffs while traveling. His dogmatic style can be a little oppressive, though, as he seldom misses an opportunity to lash out at people who like to spend more money to enjoy more comfort on the road. His anti-capitalist rants have become more strident lately, even as his personal tour book/travel clothing/luggage business has mushroomed into an empire, and he's recently entered the world of full-blown political activism. While I personally appreciate and sympathize with his Eurocentric, America-bashing views on environmentalism, drug legalization, and other issues, I've been so appalled by his apologies for genocidal terrorism and his one-sided, hateful jabs at Israel that I won't buy any of his products any more.

There's a whole thread about him somewhere on this board, I think.
