Cinque Terre..Hotel Nazionale or Locanda il Maestrale?

Hotel Nazionale is in Levanto, has attic rooms with air conditioning available..site looks good..also Locanda il Maestrale in Monterosso is available. A small hotel..6 rooms I believe..Has any one had experience or knowledge of these two places? I keep dragging my feet and available rooms are slipping away..I did try Pasquale and they are booked, as is Hotel Steno. I'm looking to my Fodor friends for help!! Any replies greatly appreciated!

Have you tried Villa Margherita? Their phone is 011-39-0187-807212) and the address is:
Via Trento e Trieste, 31
19015 Levanto (SP) - Italy

Federico is the gentleman's name who owns it. My wife and I stayed there in 2001 and will again in September. Rooms are about Euro 85 per night (including breakfast). The rooms are small, but after a day of hiking, eating and drinking wine, they are just fine.

Yes, As a matter of fact Villa Margherita was my first try..but no rooms were available. How did you like Levanto as a base when compared to Monterosso. I have been to Monterosso before, only for the day..this time I will be in the area longer..Thanks for your reply

I thought Levanto as a base was terrific. I wake up early, so I went down to the waterfront, explored the town a little bit, and had coffee with the locals. It also has an interesting cemetary. It was a short train ride to Monterosso, and all the hikes. We bought a day pass on the train that was really cheap. I liked Levanto because it wasn't as touristy as the Cinque Terre towns. We are staying there again in September and looking forward to the hikes we didn't do on our first trip. Have a great time.

Spoke with Hotel Nazionale..attic rooms are rooms with "dormer windows" set high on the wall as to not allow any viewing. I don't mind not having a view, but I would like to be able to at least look at the sky in the morning!! They save their regular rooms for those chosing all their meals at the hotel, the B&B people get the attic room..Scatch that one..
