Cinque Terre Hotel help
 

We thought we were set for Villa Steno at Monterosso but they're booked, as is Pasquale. We're the kind that needs advance reservations (meltdowns in public, especially foreign countries, are unattractive). We really want a room with a terrace on the water (for family of 3) but I sense La Spiaggia is loud (near the train) as is Baia? But not sure. Any suggestions? We're pretty set on using Monterosso as our base. Someone suggested Souvenir but I don't know where it is or if it has views. Same with Villa Adriana, Moretto, La Colonnina. Any help would be appreciated.

Check out the Sunday New York Times, March 17. There was a big piece on Cinque Terre. I went there for a daytrip last year, so I can't help you with hotels.

You wouldn't have gotten that sea-front terrace at the Steno or Pasquale. The only thing I can think of is the Porto Roca, but that may be outside you're spending limit or may be booked. Give it a look if you haven't already. <BR> <BR>The trains didn't run often enough in March to bother us. Maybe they run more often in Summer.

Did you search on this site? I was researching and found a bunch of recommendations....also, this is probably cheaper and further away than you wanted but look at the Villa Margheria in Levanto <BR>http://www.villamargherita.net/

thanks, Brian. We'll be there in June so the train may be a problem, just not sure. We'd love Porto Roca but we'd bust the bank. Villa Steno had a distant view but good enough. Any other ideas?

We stayed at the Porto Roca and loved it. Ask for a room with a terrace. The view is magical.

OP, two other hotels we thought looked nice in Montorosso were the Hotel Degli Amici and the Hotel Jolie. Both are very central, but back up from the water like the Villa Steno. Not sure if they'll have water views or not. Should be in your price range. Good luck.

La Spiaggia is not loud. Large rooms, basically furnished and some with awsome views of the waterfront and sea (we had one). Half-board, so you will pay for dinner whether you eat there or not. Food is basic and good, not great, but good. We stayed here on our first trip to Cinque Terra years ago and it really saved us since we arrived in July without reservations. The owner is delightful. <BR> <BR>Last year we took our extended family and since we needed five rooms we could not book at Steno or Pasquale The owner of these two Hotels gave us some recommendations and we wound up at 5 Terra (this is what they call it vs Cinque Terra). It is three star. Rooms are smallish but nicely furnished. Good breakfast and breakfast area. They have a restaurant though we never ate there. The owners, who are , again, delightful, told me their son is a fisherman and supplies them with fresh fish everyday. They have a nice terrace streetside where you can order drinks of almost any kind. We congregated here as we waited for our party to arrive for each outing. As I recall, it was about $125 a night and if you step onto your small balcony and crane your neck to the right or left depending upon what side of the hall you are on, you can just see the water. But, it is well located, the owners are very friendly and, most important of all, they could accomodate us. By-the-way, Porto Roca is also half-board. At 5 Terra we were able to negotiate "no board" and could take advantage of the local restaurants. Giak in Monterosso and Trattoria Gianni in Vernazza were wonderful. Not fancy, but the best prepared seafood you can find anywhere. Take the little ferry over to Vernazza from Monterosso; train back. Oh my! If I promise to be good, could I come with you?

Joe: <BR>Thanks so much for your write-up. I was feeling a little desperate with no info and me being in charge of arrangements for 2 families. I didn't realize about half-board so I appreciate the heads up.I just faxed La Spiaggia and now awaiting reply. That water view may just be worth it...

If you strike out in Cinque Terre, you might try Santa Marguerita Ligure, just a very short train ride to the five towns. There are several hotels in SML, some with sea views.
