Cinque Terre - give a hand

Italy's leading newspaper Il Corriere della Sera and the news channel TG7 have set up an account for anyone wishing to help the flood victims of the Cinque Terre and other affected areas.

The account details are:

Banca Intesa Sanpaolo, Viale Lina Cavalieri 236, Rome

IBAN - IT 80 O 03069 05061 100000000567 (note that it is an O after the 80 and not a zero)

BIC - BCITITMMXXX

Description to be included in the payment - "Un aiuto subito. Alluvione Levante ligure e Lunigiana"

If you have fond memories of your stay at the Cinque Terre and the warmth and hospitality of the people you met now is a chance to demonstrate it!

The impact of the damage on residents is much more extensive than news pictures show, including the immediate need for plenty of clean water and other basic survival supplies into the towns. In addition, these beautiful towns face a literally uphill battle removing tons of mud from their homes, businesses, churches, medical facilities, train stations and streets without causing further damage to the terrain and sea.

If you visited the region as a tourist and loved this side of Italy, or are a travel planner who has benefitted from what le Cinque Terre offers your clients, please give back something now.

UPDATE:

For those wishing to donate money to the restoration of le Cinque Terre, you can do so through the Red Cross.

Kate Little, who is an American who has lived for many years in the le Cinque Terre, writes a blog called "Little Paradiso". She posted this today, and I cannot improve on her words:

"The Italian Red Cross has a site in English where it is possible to donate with a credit card. The areas of Monterosso and Vernazza are on their knees after this flood. They are fortunate to have international fame backing them up so hopefully, everyone who has ever fallen in love with these two minuscule communities will pitch in something.

"If you have ever been touched by the Cinque Terre, or if you dream of coming here, I encourage all of you to donate something. 5 bucks buys a pair of work gloves. You have no idea how much a simple pair of work gloves makes a difference. 75 dollars can buy a shovel and a wheelbarrow. Wheels are falling off our wheelbarrows from overuse today.

"We need to also remember the other communities in Liguria and Tuscany, those that are not known to the international community- really not even known to many Italians, which are suffering just as much. The Red Cross fund goes to help all of the communities affected by the flooding and, without a doubt, will be probably the best at making decisions as to where and how the money should be spent.

"SO... drumroll please!... CLICK HERE! (see below) and donate as much as you can. I promise that the next time you come to Italy, you will be happy that you did.

"Again, on this site you can donate with a credit card, making it much easier than through an Italian bank account.

"When you go to the site, make sure that on the drop down menu, you select EMERGENCY TUSCANY AND LIGURIA.

Wow! I don't know how I missed hearing about this until today. We were just in Manarola 3 weeks ago, our 4th visit in 6 years. One of our favorite places on Earth, we consider it our spiritual home. I am devastated. I will definitely be donating to the relief effort.

The Italian Red Cross is currently the best and most secure place to send your donations, but coming this week is a non-profit donation site called Save Vernazza, starting by 3 American women married to Italians and living in Vernazza. The money will go directly to the immediate needs of the village and hopefully for the future re-building.
