Cinque Terre, Genoa, Lucca, Portofino - Trip Suggestions

My dad and his wife (ages 65) are visiting us in Italy in May. We have all traveled through Italy but have never been to the area around Cinque Terre (CT). We are wanting to relax and enjoy a different part of Italy --and of course the food. My daughter (age 4) and my husband will join us for the time in Lucca and one night in CT.

I think we will do 2 nights in CT and either one or 2 in Lucca. We would like to spend a couple of other nights in that general area. I have read mixed reports on if Genoa is worth visiting. I am not sure if you go for the port or sights? What is portovenere like? I also don't have a good sense of the other towns in that area and would appreciate any ideas.

We are basic people, enjoy bumming around towns, eating, walking the beach, and of course boat rides for the little one.

Camogli is fabulous! And you can do an easy day trip to Genoa by train from there.

Here is my report from 3 days in Camogli and 3 nights in Santa Margherita Ligure.

Should you go to Camogli, head out to San Rocco and then the walk to San Fruttuoso...

I am a CT obsessive, so take my raves with a grain of salt....We "discovered" it only 3 years ago, and ended up revising our trip plans so that we could stay longer in CT.

We then returned this past October -- with a bit of nervousness ("what if we don't love it as much?") Not only did we love it as much, we loved it even more, and we again revised our trip plans, so that this time we spent 6 nights (of our 3-week trip) in Manarola.

I wouldn't want to be there in the summer, because of the crowds...but if I were there in May, I'd spend at least 2 nights in one of the five towns.

Thanks for the feedback. We are not planning to have a car unless it is essential. I will look into the suggestions. I like the idea of a day trip to genoa.
