Sandra, thanks so much for your detailed reply and all of the great ideas! if we can change our hotel reservation, we would still prefer to stay in one of the CT towns--I would just like the feeling of imersion. if not, we will definitely consider spending a night there as you recommended.
your efffort to respond is definitely appreciated--thanks again!

You can visit the Cinque Terre and also enjoy a nice town of the Gulf of the Poets like Portovenere or Lerici. look at this article http://www.apathtolunch.com/2015/02/...rtovenere.html
Several of the hotels can provide parking.

Mike, thanks! i like this web-site a lot. good information, especially since we want to do some hiking while we are there. if we really wanted to stay in one of the CT towns, do you have any recommendations for accommodations? We also want to travel one day to Pompeii and possibly Herculaneum, so need to be able to get to transport for those areas. Do you ever do any consulting?

La Spezia is a real city - with a nice seafront - quite different from the museum towns that are in season crushingly full of tourists- a nice base with direct trains to all five villages but of course not the dreamy old towns those places revert to when the tourists haords - day trippers mainly - depart for the day.
