Cinque Terre
 

I have read to purchase a combination ticket for hiking/rails for the Cinque Terre region. 1. WOuld anyone know from which train station that pass can be purchased? I will be traveling from Venice to La Spezia then on to Manarola. 2. If the train/hiking pass could be purchased at the La Spezia station, should my initial purchase be from Venice to La Spezia? I have tried for hours to find this info, so my deepest appreciation to anyone who can assist.

I am not sure what you have read about a combination pass for hiking/trains. The hiking is free.....We purchased a ticket in SML to Riomaggiore, hiked to Vernazza. In Vernazza, we got a ticket back to SML. I would expect you can buy tickets at any of the Cinque Terre stations.

It is a local train that serves the 5 towns. I don't believe tickets for the local are available on the trenitalia site. At least they weren't when I went.

I don't know about all trails, but when we went to walk the Via del Amore from Manarola to Riomaggiore, we had to purchase a C.T. park pass that included walking the trails between the five towns, local trains between them and also included the bus up to Cornelia from the train station. There are different passes; we got the three day pass.

You can purchase them at the La Spezia train station; they cover from La Spezia up to Levanto, north of the C.T.

are these PASSES good for taking the trains to each cinque terre town?

You can buy passes that include trains or buy them just for hiking the trails. I believe that you can get one that even includes the boats. They are available for one or more days. In past years, we have purchased them at the Monterosso train station info center and at the start of the trail to Vernazza. Enjoy your visit.

I read your post again. It is not necessary to purchase the combo ticket. It may or may not save you money, depending on how often you use the train. According to info I lifted from Rick Steves, a hiking pass is 3 euro and a 1 day train/bus/hiking combo is 5.40 Euro. A three day combo is 13 Euro.

Does anyone know anything about the boat system. We only have part of 1 day in the middle of July in the Cinque area. Coming from Lucca, we hope to travel to La Spezia, and then take a boat to Vernazza?, walk in one direction to the next town and then catch the boat back.

Just returned from Manarola- we were in Lucca before that and caught the train to La Spezia (had to change at Viareggio). from La Spezia it's about 15 mins on a local train to Manarola. We didn't bother with the combined Cinque Terre card which is on sale at all the stations of the five villages). We paid 3 euros each at the start of each walk which was just for the hiking.
We had three days so we walked a)Manarola to Vernazza and took the boat back; b)walked to Riomaggiore, took boat to Portovenere, boat back to Manarola; 3) Train from Manarola

Third day -took train from Manarola to Monterosso, walked Monterosso to Vernazza and then train back to Manarola (this was rhe toughest walk- almost vertical climb for first 30 mins out of Monterosso but definitely worth it)
Boats are frequent and ply up and down between all the villages. Note- Corniglia does not have a harbour so boats do not stop there. Lovely place to have lunch enroute from Manarola to Monterosso. Have a great time!
