Cinque Terra - Vernazia
 

I am after any information from people that have been to this wonderful (by the books, anyway!) region. We plan on staying for about 3 days in Vernazia, possibly the Pensione Sorrisso's (?) Has anyone stayed there, as I have hunted thru numerous hotel/pensione sites to find information about it. Costs, facilities, etc.. We will be staying at the end of October, will it be very wet? Can you still hike between the villages quite happily in the drizzle, or is it very blustery and galey (being on the edge of a cliff!!) Any information or memories shared will be very happily accepted. With thanks... Debbie Lee...

I stayed at Vernazza for a couple nights in January, so I can't comment on October weather, but it was very tolerable in January. <BR> <BR>I recommend that you do NOT stay in a hotel. This is unusual, it may sound weird to you, because it was a weird thought for me...at first. Then I did research and almost everywhere I read suggested that we show up in Vernazza and rent a room in a private home by asking around in the streets. Stayed in a wonderful apartment with a breathtaking view for an excellent price. <BR> <BR>

I found a great room by enquiring at the Ristorante Castello, at the highest point in town, at the beginning of the trail to Corniglia (the middle of the Cinque Terre villages). It had a great terrace with a beautifull view of the town, the sea and Monterosso across the bay (the largest of the 5 villages). Very basic, but only 50,000 lire per person (about $30 each).

I forgot to mention in my last post. We have been there in May when it rained cats and dogs, and mid-October, when it was sunny and warm enough to swim. The trails will be fine in a slight drizzle, but not very comfortable in a heavy downpour. With three days there you are bound to have at least one dry day. Enjoy!

I just want to confirm what the other posters have said about lodging and hiking. I was there the first of October. Spectacular weather. Also, you can find a woman who sits at one of the outdoor tables and rents rooms. You can't miss her, or she will find you. We rented a great room for one night, then had to move to a private home the next because it was still crowded even in October. You will have a great time, no matter what turns up. Vernazza is very laid back. <BR>

Thanks so much for all your great advice. We will just 'turn up', as suggested.. Hubby is a bit of a gypsy so he'll love this bit of adice!
