Will it be crazy in Barcelona on May 5th?

Cinco de mayo is a Mexican holiday, not a Spanish one, isn't it?!?

Yes, I believe it is to do with Mexican Independence...so I really don't think that Spain will be celebrating;)

If I'm not mistaken, I think the Spanish celebrate something to do with the Spanish Civil War on May 2nd...

It would not be celebrated in Spain because In 1862 four to five thousand Mestizo and Zapotec Indians, outnumbered and outgunned, defeated the French army (oh, this could present trouble on this board) in the the &quot;Batalla de Puebla&quot; . The battle took place on May 5th (what you can learn on the internet).<BR><BR>In the U.S., the &quot;Batalla de Puebla&quot; simply became Cinco de Mayo. Although a lot of people equate it with Mexican Independence, their independence actually came on September 16, 1810. Cinco de Mayo in the U.S. is more a drink-fest than anything else. In Mexico, it is celebrated by parades and dancing (ok, maybe a little tequila, too).

Hi Julie,<BR>it�s not the civil war, but the Independence War against the french. On the 2nd of May there was an unsucessful uprising against them, and on the 3rd they fusilated many of the rebels.
