Church with huge diorama in Lisbon?
A friend will soon be going to Lisbon and I've been passing along some information from the couple of times I've been there but there's one thing I can't find.
Last time we were in Lisbon (about 10 years ago) we stopped into a church to look around. We noticed people going in and out of a door at the front, beside the altar area so we went in to see what was there. The only way I can describe it is this -- it was a huge diorama, three-sided, glass on all sides, and many, many levels of three-dimensional scenes of bible stories, old and new testaments. It was fascinating. I remember it as being taller than my husband, so more than six feet, with the front and widest section being about 5 feet. Now remember, this was ten years ago so my memory of it may be faulty. I don't know if it was a permanent or temporary installation but I can't imagine taking it down and putting it together again somewhere else as there would probably be thousands of individual pieces. I've looked and looked online and can't find anything about it and I'm beginning to wonder if I just dreamed the whole thing! Does this sound familiar to anyone? |
Found this on Trip Advisor about the Basilica da Estrela:
Time your visit so you can view the terra cotta and cork nativity -- we didn't :-(We visited on a Sunday morning between masses (an English language mass is offered at 10:00am). Recorded religious music was playing, adding to the ethereal qualities of the ornate sanctuary. One of the highlights here is a 500 figure terra cotta and cork nativity diorama in the Presepio, open 10-11:30am (Tuesday-Friday) and 3-5pm (every day except Wednesday). Admission to the church is free; admission to the Presepio is 2 euros. Tip: Bring a pocket flashlight to highlight details in the nativity. Date of experience: February 2020 |
shelemm,
Thanks for your excellent detective work! I thought it might be the Basilica da Estrela but the links I looked at didn't show any pictures of it. This is the nativity scene picture I'm seeing now, and from the description I'm sure you've got it right. The photo they show is so close up that you can't get an idea of the size and complexity of the whole thing -- it's unbelievable! https://descubralisboa.com/basilica-da-estrela/ Mystery solved! You're the best! |
