Châteauneuf-du-Pape Wine tours and Luberon Wine Producers
 

Hi,

My husband and I are staying in the village of Roussillon in Luberon with two other couples this June. We would like to hire a wine guide to set up appointments for us and take us to Châteauneuf-du-Pape for a day of wine tasting. We will have a car so we could meet them closer to the area if needed.

I would also like to know if you have any recommendations on great producers in the area of Luberon that we could bike or hike to from Roussillon Village. We prefer visiting smaller boutique style producers.

We'll be in Roussillon June 17-24. All suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Are you looking for a tour of a winery, a tasting of wines from a producer, or both??

Beaucastel is quite scenic & gives an excellent tour & tasting. It is out in the countryside.

Most of the "places" in the town of Chteauneuf du Pape are shops where you only taste & buy (a little pressure to "buy").

We've spent about 7 weeks staying in the Luberon and I've never stumbled across any winery where you could taste wine - but I wasn't looking for wineries.

I buy the Hachette wineguide and select from there.
I taste everywhere I buy. At least a crate unless I don't like the wine. If you buy less or nothing you may find a fee for tasting which I find normal.

Thanks - we're looking for tasting appointments at the wineries. For example, we were in Piemonte in October and had a wine guide set up appointments for us with two producers a day. He drove us to each of their vineyard locations and we tasted with the winemakers. It was amazing. We shipped home two cases.

I want a tour guide to set up tasting appointments for us at the wineries in Chateauneuf du Pape and drive us to the appointments. For Luberon, I just want some suggestions of wineries in the area where I can email and set up the appointments myself.

We live part-time in the village of Bonnieux. The Luberon has mostly small producers, some very small, with AOC Luberon and AOC Ventoux wines (depending on the location) and vin de pays. We like the wines very much, and they're not expensive.

Most of the wineries in the Luberon have tasting rooms where you can visit and taste/buy the wine... even the very small wineries. They may or may not speak English or be able to respond to an email in English. If you are a large group, you might be able to make an appointment for a more substantial visit/tour, but normally you can just stop in and often can meet the winemaker.

We know Domaine Girod and Coulet Rouge near Roussillon. You could ask at the tourist office in the center of town about others that you could easily bike or walk to or any where you might be able to arrange a special visit. (You might be able to email the tourist office before your visit.)

Domaine de la Citadelle outside Menerbes has a more substantial tasting room/shop and also an interesting corkscrew museum.

Don't forget the wine cooperatives, where you can often buy award-winning wines at very good prices... good for everyday drinking during your stay. We really like our Cave Coooperative de Bonnieux.

Since you'll be spending a week in the Luberon, I'd like to suggest you buy the book Provence Byways by Bob and Sue Winn. You can buy online and they'll send you a copy to download. www.provencebyways.com.

This is a great resource for day trips in the area by car, and also includes useful information about eating out. There is also a section on Luberon wineries.

Our favorite Luberon wines are from Chateau la Canorgue, outside Bonnieux.
