Christopher Wren House or Castle Hotel in Windsor?
For my last day and night of a ten day trip to England I will probably stay in Windsor before my flight out of Heathrow the next day. My question is should I stay in The Christopher Wren House (I found and online deal for 99 GBP per night for a twin) or should I stay at the Castle Hotel across from Windsor Castle?

I am taking my Dad on a tour of England and we are both history lovers. Which of these hotels evokes the most English history and which is nicer overall? All opinions are greatly welcomed.

Thanks,
Len

Wow, I'm no expert here as I've never stayed overnight in Windsor, but I've been by the Christopher Wren House many times and it looks wonderful. I've only heard great things about it. Not familiar with the Castle Hotel, but at 99 pounds I'd grab the Wren House!

I just spotted the other thread where these two hotels were briefly discussed so now I see why you were asking this question. I liked the comment about the Wren House being "ancient" and overpriced. I'm not sure what was meant by that, but it reminded me of a comment I once got from friends who hated an old hotel in southern France that I dearly loved. They said, "you wouldn't have believed it. The walls were actually just stone, no dry wall or any thing. It was like being made to sleep in a cellar". Well, that's all it takes for me. Put me in a stone walled room and I love it -- feeling like I'm really in Europe. I'm not saying the Wren House walls are stone, but ancient can be great. Sure beats the Holiday Inn modern approach for me.

I agree Patrick. "Ancient" to me is always a plus. I love the thought of being places that are form another time...steeped in history. So I booked the night at The Christopher Wren House for 999 GBP. I am excited about our stay in Windsor. Thanks Patrick.

Len,

The Sir Christopher Wren House Hotel may be ancient, but they done a lot of renovation over the past few years. It is a great location right alongside the Thames...walk uphill towards Windsor Castle or across the pedestrian bridge to quaint Eton.

I was the poster who called the Wren House ancient and over priced. I paid 180 pounds for a deluxe king river view room. I always opt for small and charming whenever possible, but this was not charming. We had a very small room on the top floor, there was no elevator, and all the floors really creaked. The public rooms and the patio overlooking the river were lovely. They also serve a very nice breakfast buffet. The lack of an elevator might be a consideration depending on your father's stamina, or you might get a room on a lower floor.

We had a wonderful dinner at the House On The Bridge just across the river from the Wren. We had a view of the river, the castle, and planes taking off from Heathrow. Another restaurant that looked good was Antica on the main street of Eton.

Nothing in Windsor is far from the castle!

No it is a very short walk , less than 5 minutes. Make sure you walk over the bridge into Eton.

Have fun! Darn there is a great restaurant very near CWH and I can't think of the name.it's right around the corner and 1 block down on the left hand side.
