Christmas - New Year Holiday
 

Hello All, I am looking to book a 10 days trip from 23 dec to 1 jan to london to celebrate my birthday and the festive period. I am looking for suggestions of things to see and do around in this 10 days. I also would like to enjoy snow, is snow typical during this time of the year ? We are a family of 4. My other option of place to visit in Prague or Budapest but not sure if its good enough for 10 days trip. And snow remains an important factor. suggestions please

Bookies take bets on whether London will have a white Christmas, defined as "one snowflake to be observed falling in the 24 hours of 25 December". The last time they had to pay out was in 1999.

I can only write of our five years living in Vienna. We have not had one white Christmas; light snow perhaps may have fallen around the days, but nothing that would inspire you to visit. We have also been to Prague and Budapest several times between Christmas and New Years and have not experienced "snow."

I have been in London for the 10 past Christmases and I believe we may have had a smattering of snow on 1 of those.

Do keep in mind that there is no public transit (none at all) on Christmas Day 25 Dec. Things start to close down on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. Boxing Day is a big shopping day and transit runs on a Sunday schedule.

To be (almost) sure of snow you need to go to Northern Scandinavia, Finland, possibly the Baltic states, or Iceland, though with climate change they are all experiencing warmer and warmer winters and less and less snow.

Maybe go to an Alpine ski resort for guaranteed snow. Even if you don't ski, there are other things to do, like taking the train to Jungfraujoch in Switzerland. Other resorts have lots of activities for non skiers too.

Yes for sure snow go to Swiss or French Alps - maybe do London and fly to Zurich and head for the Interlaken region and the Jungfrau where at higher elevations there is perpetual ice and snow.

Take a train from Zurich to Interlaken and then a mountain train to say Grindelwald or Wengen -these may well not have snow but you can take trains to Europe's highest train station - at Jungfraujoch and see:

There are other snowy Alpine resorts - lots but the Jungfrau Region IMO is the easiest to get to and there is a myriad of other fun things to do in the area.

Trains and cable ways go off in all directions - for lots on Swiss trains and the Jungfrau Region in particular: www.sbb.ch; www.swisstravelsystem.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

If snow is a prerequisite your options are very limited.
