Christmas Markets and Food in Austria?

Two years ago I travelled through the German heartland in mid december and had wonderful time at their many Christmas markets.

Now I am planning a possible short trip this Christmas to Austria and was wondering if the heritige is the same? Strangely enough what I am looking forward to the most is the Christmas market food. In Germany they had open grills which sold pork meat sandwiches, chocolate covered eggwhite sweets, mini doughnuts and leberkuchen biscuits.

Will I find the same charming atmosphere in Austria, perhaps around Salzburg or Vienna, and more importantly will I find the same food!

I'm not sure about Vienna but Salzburg is totally consumed by their Christmas market. It is in the old town all around the Cathedral and Mozart square. You will find most of the same stuff. On a cold day when you are shopping outside I recommend the rum spiked hot chocolate.

Yes, of course.

Yes. We went to Vienna last year and enjoyed the Christmas markets there very much. So much so that Mr whoknew commented just last night he would really enjoy going again to something similar in Germany next year.

There is nothing better than walking thru a Christmas Market in Germany and Austria. The smell and taste of food and Gluwien is great. I was a little surprised that a lot of the crafts were made in china or somewhere else. If you get a chance to go to Hungary or Slovakia there are more homemade crafts. But don't take this as a downer. You will be so overwelmed you will love it.
