Christmas Markets

Would appreciate any suggestions for towns, lodging and car rentals. Also any recent info on Chicago/Frankfurt or Munich low airfares. Thanks!!!

Nora - For airfares check out www.tiss.com. Last week I checked and they had fares on Air Canada out of Milwaukee or Detroit for around $360 RT plus tax. Check out the cheap flight forum at www.eurotrip.com also for other reputable consolidators. Good Luck Tom

Nora - need to edit my last post. I meant Chicago and Milwaukee not Detroit. Regards Tom

Nora,
The oldest Christmas market in Germany is held in Dresden on the Sundays before Christmas. There is a huge Christmas market during Advent in Nuremberg. For auto rentals, check out Kemwel, Europcar and AutoEurope; all have websites; I've used all three at one time or another and been pleased with their autos, rates and service.

Nora - Just for fun I looked at tiss.com with dates of Dec 1-12 and they had a fare of $337 rt plus tax on KLM/Northwest. E-mail me direct if you have any questions. Tom

My wife and I did Europe last year for the Christmas Markets and we found nice ones in Wurzburg, Dinklesbuhl, Munich, Koln, and Brussels. In Rothenberg, the town itself seems like a Christmas village.

Nora, We just booked a flight from NJ to Germany for about $425 per person on Luftansa to see the Christmas markets. We are coming back during the week of Christmas, so it was not as cheap as sale price if you come back by Dec 13. We rented a car from Auto Europe,
As Wes said Europcar is pretty good also which you can get info at www.dollar.com
whom they are partnered with. You can also try flying to Dusseldorf which is a little more North and East of Frankfurt.
Most of the Major cities have good markets. Munich is very good, Koln was disappointing and not worth it. Nurnburg is the most famous market and well deserved. Try to catch the childrens lantern parade, a very special event to watch. (http://www.christkindlesmarkt.de/) is the web site for Nurnburg market. I was at Dresden market a couple weeks after the wall fell,(1989), ouch!) It was nice, I am sure it has improved greatly since then. Rothenburg is small and kept that way and is very nice. I have heard that the Stuttgart market is also very nice, I hope to see it this time. Try the web site from about on travel to Germany, Rita (forum host) has an article on the markets and other good info and has a chat on Wednesday night. http://gogermany.miningco.com/travel/europe/gogermany/ Many of the small towns have a market on weekends only a week or two before Christmas, which can also be very nice, they usually have special items from the area. Salzburg is supposed to have a nice market also. Always try the local special food or items wherever you go. Don't assume they are the same thing that you might be used to at home. If I can be more help let me know. Enjoy !!
