Ok come and correct me but I believe the biggest one is in nurenberg. There is a web cam with several different locations to view every year. Do a search. It is my understanding there is one major one.

Yes, Nurnberg has a very famous Christmas Market. Check, out this website: http:/www.europe.cnn.com/TRAVEl/DESTINATIONS/9812/germany.xmas/

p.s. The Hauptmarkt actually looks like the picture on the site!

I was in Cologne last year around the Christmas season and they had 4. The atmosphere was definately unlike anything I've seen in the US, but aside from the locations, the stalls were pretty similar. My personal favorite was the one by the Cologne cathederal...
Enjoy :)

The biggest is Nurenberg, the prettiest, but small Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and the best of Europe is in France/Alsace in Strassbourg. Don't go to any of them on a weekend, too many people more than you imagine. And wear warm clothes.

Heidelberg also has a substantial Christmas market. Almost every big town and city does, and even many smaller towns. The one in Strasbourg is justifialy renowned.

I was in Munich last December & they have a huge Christmas market as well. It was very crowded. I'm sure some people were shopping but I think a lot of folks just go for the atmosphere. BTW, if you enjoy adult beverages you'll want to stop at one of the stands that sell Gluhwein. It's warm red wine with cinnamon, sugar, and (I think) lemon. It's wonderful!

All are good. Rothenburg is already filling up. Our favorite spot, Reichs Kutchenmeister, is full for first weekend we wanted but may be okay for you. Nuremburg also has the largest and most well known. You can stay in Rothenburg and drive over there to visit that one. Saves switching hotels. We also enjoy Heidelberg in the old town. Zur Backmulde Hotel nice location to visit that fair.
