Christmas Market Questions

Rather than hijack a recent thread on Christmas markets in the Tirol I thought I would ask mine separately as it is only somewhat related. At the moment I have fully cancelable reservations for the last weekend (two nights) in November in Graz, Innsbruck, Salzburg, and Krakow. We're basing our destination decision on the weather, but should the weather be cooperative in all places and, sightseeing aside (we have visited all four destinations outside of Christmas), any commentary from those who have visited the markets would be useful in helping us decide. Thank you!

Hi,

We loved the markets in both Innsbruck and Salzburg during our trips the last week of Nov/first week of Dec. in 2010 and again in 2013. We had visited both many times in the last 12 years, but during the Christmas markets they are even more beautiful. I would give an "edge" to Innsbruck during this time, as the majestic alpine scenery only adds to everything else.

What are your weather concerns? We had some snow during both trips and it also added to the magical feel of the towns decorated for Christmas. It didn't hinder our plans at all.

We have photo's at:

COFFEEQUEEN, wow, what great photos. I like the way you have each place identified - a lot of work keeping these sites straight no doubt.

Makes me want to return to Germany and environs...

coffeequeen, a bit off topic but did you go into the Swarovski Kristallwelten?

I loved it

coffeequeen/Paul, your photos are beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I think I would give Innsbruck the nod over Salzburg; I can always day trip from Vienna if I absolutely must see the markets.

My weather concerns are more related to driving; we've been in hazardous fog in the Salzkammergut and had snowy rain on a drive to Prague in winter. Given that this is a short weekend getaway, the destination with the "best" weather will get out vote.

Ok, I get it now. Where are you coming from for this visit? If you wind up with Salzburg, you could also visit Berchtesgaden, as we enjoyed Berchtesgaden's market and love the Berchtesgaden area.

coffeequeen, we live in Vienna, so a day trip with friends to Salzburg for the markets is entirely feasible. Hadn't considered Berchtesgaden for this trip, but we will be in Munich for a long weekend before Christmas and could add that as an outing. Thank you!
