Christmas in Wales

I found a thread from 2003 about this but nothing more recent ....

I plan to be in the UK from roughly Dec 15 - Jan 15, and while my first thought was to spend the "season" (ie the days leading up to Dec 25) in London for concerts etc, I am now thinking about spending Christmas in Wales.

(My father (d. 2015 ) was born in Glamorgan in 1923 and emigrated to the US after WW2, so there is a draw, but no family left.)

Suggestions for spending Christmas -- the week leading up to 12/25? the week after? --- in Wales? I could ramble around, but is there anywhere which does Christmas distinctively? and -- dare I say --- not terribly commercially?

Since I will be on my own, the thought of quiet and cozy, and maybe feeling "like a local" for week would be lovely. Curling up by a fire (with WiFi or a book ) in the local pub, .... ... you know .....

Budget would be about $150/pn. Public transportation, though I suppose I could rent a car necessary)

Sorry for this very vague and squishy question, but let the brainstorming begin!

Thanks!

South Wales has undoubtedly some lovely scenery and is a great place to wander, but not maybe in late December. Short days, not much open during the days after Christmas Day and if you intend curling up somewhere with wifi or a book, does it really matter where you do it?

I would prefer somewhere with access to theatres and a wide choice of restaurants and pubs at that time of the year, so a bigger town or city. As far as living like a local is concerned, you can't for such a short time and I've always found the Welsh in Welsh speaking areas to be a bit unfriendly to outsiders.

Maybe staying in London might be a better bet, or if you must, then Cardiff

Many country houses in the UK have Christmas multi-day packages (although they may be able your budget). They serve food, do social activities/walks, and the houses are decorated for Christmas so look really beautiful. We have never done one but it may be an option. A quick google search got me these:
