Christmas in the Alps

Hi, I'm looking to get some suggestions on a trip I'm taking this winter. My boyfriend and I booked flights a few weeks ago roundtrip from Chicago to Munich leaving December 20th to January 3rd. We were planning to travel through Germany and Austria, and possibly either Switzerland or France for a few days. We really just started doing our research on where/what to do, but I thought it would be nice to get some feedback from actual people.

About us:
We're both in our mid-twenties. We love trying new foods, going on adventures, getting drinks at neat pubs, and on occasion going to a nightclub (if it's worth seeing). We'd like to see some shows, like the ballet or opera, or whatever you think is worth seeing. We're looking to do a few days of skiing, visiting markets, and ice skating. We're debating on renting a car and doing the drives ourselves or taking trains. (Please tell us what you think would be the most cost effective/time effective option)

We're planning on staying in Berlin for New Years Eve and The Black Forest for the few days before. We were thinking of spending 2 days in Munich either in the beginning or end of our trip. Aside from those plans, we haven't decided what to do for the rest of our time.

Where do you think is the best place to spend our Christmas Eve and Christmas day is? I've heard a lot of the towns shut down and it's impossible to find meals. Do you have any suggestions of where we should stay/what to do that day? At this point, we've heard Vienna is a good option, but we're open to any smaller towns or other country suggestions too. We are staying with friends in the Black Forest and Berlin, so we don't mind spending money on a four or five star hotel or going to an expensive restaurant, as long as it would make a good christmas.

Also, do you think that traveling through Munich, Vienna, the Black Forest, and Berlin in 14 days is enough time? And, do you think we should visit Switzerland or France over Austria? I'd love to hear any suggestions on restaurants, bars, shows, hotels, or activities we should go to or do.

Thanks so much!

You will be in Germany during the Christmas Market season and no mention of visiting the Christmas Markets? Some people apply so many cities so many days rule at any time of the year. But whether you have enough days or not really depends on what you plan to do. The outdoor activities not related to snow or ice are probably limited at that time. For shows and concerts, you have to probe activities by consulting web sites. For example, Berlin Philharmonic has concert during your visit and so is the Vienna Staatoper offering ballets and operas. How about Nutcracker? I took trains last year in December because I covered a lot of long distance segments. It snowed practically every day. From ICE trains zooming to the next city at near full operating speed I would see the cars fighting snow storms.

Ski resorts will be packed around Christmas as most Europeans will have a one or two week holiday and a lot of them go skiing. In the resorts there will be plenty of restaurants open.

Probably there will be enough snow in the Alps (last years there was), but there have also been years when there was very little snow around X-mas. Buit all the resorts do have snow canaons etc.
