Christmas in Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Germany
 

Our family of 5 (kids ages 13-19) is considering spending Christmas 2026 in Europe. We thought keeping it to 2 or 3 cities over a 7-8 day trip would be manageable, travel by train. Understanding that it will be cold, and tourist activities indoors (music or theater events), which cities or areas do you think would be best/ most festive for spending Christmas?

What about Vienna and Munich? I think they are a good pair and with Vienna you will have a lot of musical offerings. With Munich you will have all its Christmas markets. Vienna will have one too but Germany is the home of Christmas markets and there will be more and better in Munich. Also the Deutsches Museum in Munich is a good indoor activity which suits all ages.

Vienna and Munich are a good combination, agreed. Though, having lived in Vienna for seven years (with our Tween and Teen) I can say it is possible to "overdo" Christmas markets. 🤣 There's plenty of things to see and do in Vienna to occupy everyone for a week, leaving time to enjoy the markets when they're best--at night.

If the 7-8 days includes travel time you really wouldn't have enough time for 3 cities. Seven days home to home would only net you 4.5 days free on the ground -- so just one city might be the best option.

If the trip is 8 days then you'd have about 5.5 days (minus another half a day travel between places) so 2 cities could work

IF you actually mean say 10.5 or 11 days home to home - netting 8+-ish days on the ground - then you could maybe squeeze in 3 cities but it would be awfully rushed IMO.

FourforTravel: Sounds like we'll start in Munich, make our way to Vienna for the few days around Christmas. Any suggestions for particular Vienna hotels / areas in which to stay (2 rooms for family of 5 gets $$$, though spirit of city might be better at hotel than AirBnB) and/or activities in Vienna?

My older daughter plays flute, so we'll also try to find some classical performances while there. Everyone's getting excited at the idea!

I can't really help with particular hotels, as we hosted family and friends in our home when they visited.

The days around Christmas in Vienna require careful planning. Many stores close early on 24 December and remain closed on 25 December and 26 December (St. Stephen's Day), though several museums will be open on the 26th. Additionally, a good number of restaurants close for Christmas Day, though, so advance reservations are imperative.

This being written, I personally would find an airbnb where everyone can relax and hang out after touring the city and enjoying the markets. Where would I stay with a family? The Inner Stadt ($$$$); closer-in Leopoldstadt (2nd District); Neubau (7th District); Josefstadt (8th District) and Alsergrund (9th District), though with these Districts I wouldn't stay along the Gürtel (221); and maybe Mariahilf/Weiden (6th and 4th Districts, respectively). There's nothing "wrong" with the other Districts; some are more residential and further out from all of the tourist attractions. If you select an airbnb, find one near a convenient Straßenbahn (tram) stop, especially one that either travels the Ringstraße or easily connects. You don't want too many connections at night when everyone is cold and tired.

You'll have no shortage of classical performances to enjoy. For a more authentic experience, try to find intimate concerts in the churches. Again, there's nothing "wrong" with the big tourist performances, but if you could get tickets for a performance at, say, Schatzkammer des Deutschen Ordens (Church of the Teutonic Order) or Annakirche your experience will be enhanced. Also keep in mind that those old stone churches can get pretty cold by December.
