Christmas in London

Will be in London for ten days during holiday (with children, ages 7 and 5). What are the must experiences, with two young kids, that would be memorable? Looking forward to time even though will be away from home for Christmas.

Hi BarYo, my first advice to you would be; stay in a flat, not in a hotel.
London is a huge city, with lots to do. Natural History Museum, the Zoo, playgrounds in the parks, Science Museum (has a hands-on area for small kids) are just a start.

The important thing to know is that London - and most of the rest of the UK - is closed on Christmas Day.

No public transport, shops closed, attractions closed, few restaurants open - the ones that are open will be either offering a Christmas lunch at an extortionate price or ethnic food. Either you cook for yourself or book somewhere within walking distance

Having said that, you'll see London as few Londoners even see it - quiet.

Www.walks.com does a special Christmas walk every Christmas Day so you may want to check their website closer to Christmas for details.

Take the children to a panto. But make sure it is one aimed at a full family audience (some can be marketed very much towards adult humour only).

Keep an eye out for temporary open air ice rinks - there has usually been one at Somerset House. There is usually also something to see along the South Bank at Christmas time, as well as carol concerts and sing-along events all over the place.
