Christmas in Europe
Suggestions needed for a family holiday anywhere in Europe for the Christmas New Year week. Five of us Me Husband and adult children and son-in-law. Daughter and son-in-law live in London so that's not an option. Spain We've seen. I thought of Amalfi coast...weather likely to be rainy. I've run out of ideas. Myknos and Santorini No flights from London at that time of the year

Umm, you may have run out of ideas but there is a huge amount of European land mass leftover once you take away Spain, London, the Amalfi and the Greek islands, containing several dozen interesting cities, plus no end of scenic ski resorts. People will throw ideas at you and reminisce about their past trips, but it would help if you said what your budget is, what your interests are, and whether you are ok with freezing temps and deep snow or not. Also, are you just going for Christmas day or for how long? No point in suggesting you all meet up in Venice if some of you can't handle lots of staircases, or meet up in Stockholm if this a budget trip, or head off to Istanbul if you want lots of Christmas lights.

If your plan is to seek warmth and sunshine, you might be better off in Marrakesh.

We lived in London for a while and had a great Christmas week in Nice. Reasonable weather (better than the UK!) and lots to see and do in Nice and the surrounding towns and villages. We travelled by train and bus. You can fly to Nice or do as we did, Eurostar to Paris then the TGV to Nice. It took a while but we were concerned about fog, snow and ice disrupting any flights at that time of year.
I've also heard good things about Paris at Christmas. You could try searching on this forum for Christmas ideas, also www.slowtrav.com If you want apartment ideas in Nice, I can find the website we used, they have lots of nice places and were good to deal with. Kay |
Looks like we are best off with Amalfi
How do you rate this itinerary we all meet up in Naples Spend the Christmas Eve and Christmas day there and the drive to Positano.Plonk ourselves for 4-6days there and see all the places along the coast from there.Weather at that time of the year is my only concern and also whether to make Sorrento our base or Positano. |
I would avoid Amalfi at Christmas. It could be foggy and rainy much of the time. Many hotels and restaurants will be closed and there won't be many people around. If you decide to go, rent a car as busses and ferries will not run regularly.
Why not consider Rome? Rome is inland and less likely to be grey, damp and foggy. There is a lot more to see and do and you will have an easier time finding hotels and restaurants. It will definitely be more CHristmassy. My first choice would be Paris but as it is close to London I imagine your daughter has been often. |
