Fodor's Travel Talk Forums - Christmas hotel recommendation for Austria/southern Germany

We are a family of four living in the UAE and are looking for a recommendation for a resort or luxury hotel over the Christmas period in this area. We had planned on the Intercontinental Berchtesgaden, where we've stayed previously and loved, but they are already fully booked. Original plan was to fly into Munich, spend a couple of nights there and/or Nurnburg seeing the Christmas markets, then head south to the resort for 5 nights, doing day trips to Salzburg and other nearby places.

There are plenty of luxury hotels in the vicinity, but their websites rarely show pictures from the winter, and don't talk much about winter activities. We are hoping for snow, for a suite with a fireplace, somewhere cosy to have a lovely traditional christmas and relax for a couple of days. Skiing is not one of our things, but we could give the kids a taste of it so no objection to a more mountain/ski resort-type place rather than a straight hotel. The only constraint is that we have booked the flights (stupidly did this before the hotel booking) so we will need to start from Munich.

I have done some searches but only turned up some posts on Christmas markets without a focus on accommodation. If anyone has had a really good christmas experience in this area, I'd be grateful for your comments.
