Christmas Holiday

My family and I are not skiers, but would like to spend the Christmas/New Years holiday in Europe. One son is interested in Edinburgh, one is interested in Istanbul. I am considering Salzburg, Vienna and Bratislava, and the DH doesn't care as long as we get away!

What are your opinions? I know they are all different, but cold. Will Istanbul be dead this time of year, or is it still lively enough for tourists? We spent a relaxing, laidback holiday in Ireland for Christmas two years ago. Things were closed until the 27th, and we don't want a repeat of that. Am I making sense?

Thanks!
Suse

Here's a lovely trip report by images on her Austrian Christmas Trip.

We have been to St. Gilgen in early October and love the area.

Thanks Betty. Her trip sounds lovely.

I forgot to add that my sons are ages 17 and 20. I just started to wonder if Salzburg/Vienna would be exciting enough for them. Should I save that trip for later?

Have any Fodorites been to Istanbul over Christmas?

I was in Istanbul during mid December 2006. As Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country (though technically secular), Turkish people don't celebrate Christmas. You won't find Christmas markets or decorations. However, Istanbul is my most favorite city in the world. If you have the chance to go there, don't miss it.

amandakay,

So, Istanbul would be a good place to go over the holidays, regarding weather, daylight, etc? Christmas atmosphere is not necessary if we are experiencing a different culture. I'm really leaning towards Istanbul My 17 year old would LOVE it.
Thanks for your input,
Suse

Edinburgh for things to do, for sure. Snow not guaranteed. New Year will be cold
