I haven't read all the responses here, so this might have been mentioned already, but how about Berchtesgaden?

It's a gorgeous Bavarian village in Germany surrounded by Austria on three sides and only a short drive or train ride from Salzburg.

We had a wonderful Christmas trip one year - we based ourselves in Berchtesgaden and Mittenwald and ended in Munich. We visited Salzburg, Garmisch, the Zugspitz, Oberammergau, Neuschwanstein, Schloss Linderhoff, Oberstdorf, and a few small alpine villages in Austria.

We rented a car and just explored, accidentally stumbling onto some Christmas markets in tiny villages.

It was a great trip - we had a ton of snow, which really made it feel festive, yet it was prior to the ski season (which didn't get underway until after Christmas) so we felt as if we had Bechtesgaden and Mittenwald all to ourselves.

We've also spent time in Switzerland around the holidays, and I agree with swandav, that Christmas is really low key there. That's not to say it isn't nice, but it's nothing like Christmas in Germany, which is very festive.

If you're willing to consider Vienna, you might also want to think about Dresden with side trips to Meissen and Gorlitz, among other places.

Snow was thin on the ground this past Christmas, so who knows, you may get very heavy snow this year.

We never had snow for our Christmases in Germany, but that didn't detract from the experience in any way.

Thanks for all the replies! If I was making the decision alone I would probably pick salzburg or that Berchtesgaden area OR do a river cruise, but I have to see what the others think. I think they are in love with the idea of switzerland but the idea does not seem to be reality! does anyone know how far Berchtesgaden is to hohenschwangau by car?
thanks for the ideas and keep them coming... Or even more specific ideas about the places noted above.
Thanks
