Christianhaven in Copenhagen - Not Such a Hit

We recently vistied Copenhagen and heeded Frommer's advice about dining in Christianhavn. In reality options are limited (very) and is a bit of a walk from any other restaurants if you can't find anything that tempts your tummy. I wouldn't recommend this as a nite out.

Christianshavn is more for an interesting daytime wander with lunch than a dinner destination IMO. We did enjoy the day we spent there. Make sure to get beyond Pusher Street which is pretty much touristy, but once you get into the neighborhoods, it is very interesting. Just don't take pictures without asking.

Kristiana? a.k.a. Christiana? For dinner????!! Hmmm... methinks there is a mixup.

Christiana is a commune within the Copenhagen city limits where soft or organic drugs are openly sold and used without much government intervention. The recently elected city government has said it is considering selling the property--which is still owned by the city--to developers.

Don: You are right. I interchanged Christiana, the squatters' rights area, which started in an old Army barracks and spread up Pusher Street and beyond (free living with few restraints) with Christianshavn, the larger neighborhood of cobbled streets, antique lamps, restaurants and cafes which encompasses Christiana. Christiana is still worth a daytime wander. Christianshaven has much more to offer.

Christiania:
Eat at Loppen, which is a very good restaurant, or the vegetarian restaurant, morgenstedet, which is good and cheap.
Christiania is nicer in the daylight (in the summer) and at night might seem a bit rough but it is really rather peaceful (just dress casual, be aware and dont flash a bunch of $100 bills).
Great live music at Loppen (local and international acts), den Grå Hal (sometimes semi-big international names) and Operaen(a rougher crowd though).
Stay away from of Woodstock!!!
All in all its a friendly place and a fun place for younger tourist to get in contact with local youngsters.
Enjoy.
Ulf
