Try the Hotel Leveque and the Hotel Champs de Mars both in the 7eme on a beautiful market street. I think both are in the Rick Steves guidebook and I think both have websites. I have stayed at both and was pleased and a great location but not much nightlife.<BR>Michelle

I stayed at Hotel Daguerre a few years ago. http://www.parisplanet.com/daguerre/index.htm<BR>Nothing fancy, but clean. About 70 euros I think. I loved the street it's on with lots of restaurants, bakeries, etc. A couple of minutes walk you'll find yourself in a pedestrian only area with a fruit market, flower shop, butcher shop, etc. I felt as if I was staying in a true Parisian neighborhood. I also sent a friend to Hotel Daguerre later and he enjoyed it too. It's about a leisurely 10-minute walk to the Metro, but we enjoyed our stroll each time. There a convenient bus stop around the corner, and we used the bus a lot. Personally, I preferred the buses as I could see where we were going -- we had a pass, so we hopped on and off a lot.<BR><BR>I walked by Champs de Mar and it looked charming and is in a good location. I think it will also fit within your budget.<BR><BR>I doubt either hotel has air conditioning just in case you're going in summer.

We stayed at the Hotel du Dragon, in arr 7. Its in Germain du Pres area, in between two metro stops, and walking distance to many sites and to shopping. Its clean, comfortable and convenient, and the staff is very helpful and friendly. It was less than $100 a night for a double en suite. <BR><BR>

Stentor<BR><BR>We stayed at Hotel Flatters on 3 rue Flatters (5e) two years ago. It was basic, clean, quiet and nice. We're staying there again next week. The rate for a double is EUR 50.

Stentor, if you are still reading these posts look into the following hotels...Hotel Le Central on rue Descartes should cost you no more than about $50.00 (US)...it's a typical Parisian building and the rooms are clean...it sits atop the Montagne Ste-Genevieve which is also within walking distance of the Le Pantheon and rue Moufettard...Hotel de Beaune on rue de Beaune should cost you no more than $75.00 (US)...it's in a nice building that's near Musee d'Orsay and the street is line with antique shops and art dealers...they used to be considered a value...I haven't stayed in them...I learned about them from some of the young women I coached.

Just back today from Paris where we stayed at Hotel Excelsior in Rue Cujas for 72Euro per night for a double room, very central,McDonalds for breakast and off, Paris Walks book a great companion for our wonderful walks around Paris.A wonderful finale to 2 months in Greece,Italy and France and Barcelona&gt;<BR>Go and enjoy.<BR><BR>

We just returned from Paris on July 17, 2002. I took a look at the outside of the Hotel Esmeralda, as it is adjacent to the Shakespear & Co. bookstore. The location is great, but I cannot comment upon the rooms. The Esmeralda had posted rates of 60 euros for a double. We stayed at the Hotel Ibis Bercy, 19, Place des Vins de France, near the Cour St. Emillion Metro stop. They have a special rate of 61 euros per night until the end of August BUT, the hotel is no longer air conditioned. They describe the rooms as " air rafraichi ", which means that they are just pumping outside air through the air conditioning ducts in the rooms. Be careful when booking any Ibis hotels in the summer months in France or Italy, as several of them have removed their air conditioning systems. The rest of the year they represent good - if plain - values.

I second the other monique. Although we stayed at the Hotel du Cadran it is across the street from the hotel-du-champ-de-mars which seems nice. In addition, it was recommended by an American that previously lived in Paris as a good hotel. We met her at the cafe across the street on the opposite corner. Laundromat nearby, cafes and it is in the Rue Cler area which has shops for essentials. Very nice and convenient to everything for us.

A couple of years ago I stayed in the Hotel Gay Lussac which was very cheap and clean (many cheap Paris hotels aren't) and in a good location (the 5th, close to the Luxembourg)
