Choice of hotel in Avignon
Which of these hotels would be more ideal to stay at for 1 night in Avignon, Hotel de Blauvac, Hotel Palais du Papes or Hotel Bristol? I already reserved at Hotel Bristol but now looking at the reviews on Fodors I'm wondering if I chose the wrong hotel, it's more expensive than the other 2 hotels but then again it is only for 1 night.
I just want our experience in France to be nice, even though I'm not expecting anything luxurious for that price I certainly want a room to be light and airy and clean. |
I no longer recommend Hotel Palais du Papes after having stayed on our last visit there in a room with an overpowering sewer smell and the noise from early morning garbage pickup all but precluded obtaining a good night's sleep.
Apologizing for complicating the selection process but I should highly recommend the Hotel d'Europe on the upper end (still cheaper than the Bristol I believe): http://www.heurope.com/ -or- as a very modest choice: Hotel Boquier - simple but very clean and a short walk to the train station. All rooms with themes designed by the very charming hosts (Jean and Christine Giovannetti). Parking available 04 90 82 34 43 |
It isn't always very easy to find light and airy rooms for a cheap price in hotels, as a lot of the rooms may not have a great window that is open to a good view and they are often small. The Bristol is an excellent location, so for one night, I don't think it can be that bad and you aren't there much during the day time anyway, that the light can be that big a deal, I wouldn't think. I didn't stay there but admired it and thought it was a great location and looked very nice. The really nice hotels in Avignon are a lot more expensive than that one.
The Hotel d'Europe is a much higher end hotel than the Bristol, which is just a mid-range 3* hotel. I think the Europe's room rates are about double the Bristol, it is not cheap. |
WOW, you're not kidding, Hotel d'Europe is twice as much as Bristol!

My apologies as I confused the Hotel Bristol with another hotel. The Hotel d'Europe is arguably the best hotel in central Avignon. I updated my Avignon hotel listings and realized that I had no personal information on the Bristol. Is it possible that this hotel has been recently renovated and maybe even undergone a name change?
The Hotel Boquier is very close by and has itself had an ownership change: http://www.hotel-boquier.com/ As a backup just in case other hotels have no occupancy, the Hotel d'Angleterre is just around the corner and though not as charming as others, it's good for one night and not far from the train station. http://www.hoteldangleterre.fr/ |
We quite liked the Hotel Palais du Papes when we were there last September but our room faced the place so no trash pickup noise and no sewer smell, thank goodness. Our room was huge, clean and very modern bathroom. I loved the location. There's conversation audible until fairly late, if the windows are open. But, I'm not disputing Sarastro's experience, easy to happen at the same hotel at the same time depending on room placement.

This probably doesn't meet your desire for light and airy, but I recently stayed at the Hotel Danieli and found it quite nice, especially for the price. If you look at their website, be warned that the hotel no longer looks anything like the pics. It has been remodeled and is very urban chic with dark wood and tiles, dark blue and plum carpets, drapes, etc. Still, I'll take a recently remodeled hotel in any color! It's very convenient to the train station (less than 10 mins walk straight down the main street). I tried to stay at the Boquier but they were closed during my week, so I'll be interested to hear what you think of it if you end up there. Have fun!

I stayed at the Bristol it was fine , nothing fancy and I spent one night at the Europe on another trip but, only because that year the TGV was still arriving at the old station, I'm sluggish in the morn and was spending the weeks there in Villeneuve-Lez-Avignon so switched for that night

I do not know about Hotels in Avignon but if you have some time for dinner, try a very nice and not too expensive restaurant called Newground in the old city (rue de la Saraillerie); their website is restaurantnewground.com; you will be amazed

A second for Hotel d'Angleterre as a good back-up plan. Close to the train, quiet, adequate. We have twice stayed there with rooms to the back courtyard area and enjoyed mornings with the windows wide open and blue skies.

I also have had good experiences at Hotel Palais du Papes, I've only stayed in the rooms facing the palace square, but have looked at other rooms in the hotel. Some of the rooms are very nicely renovated and some are rather tired and drab, you just need to ask for an updated room on the square.
