Chocolate in Zurich?
 

I need some short notice help friends. Leaving tomorrow on a last minute business trip to Lenzburg & Zurich. I'd love some suggestions on where to find #1) the best chocolate in Zurich - regardless of price and #2) where to stock up on some good stuff that I can't get in the USA but might be a little less expensive.

Any and all opinions greatly welcomed.

Well one of the most popular stores is Sprungli on the Bahnhoffstrasse. Excellent goods. There is another shop on down the Bahnoffstrasse towards the lake, across the street, that is also excellent buy my feeble mind forgets the name. You will not go wrong with Sprungli (they will even let you sample before buying :) )

The Sprungli macarons are on par with Ladurée in Paris, but frankly all of my friends in Zurich buy their chocolate in tablets from Migros and Coop. Don't forget that the Swiss eat much more chocolate than any other country, so they don't buy dainty little individual chocolates for normal consumption -- they buy what is good even if it doesn't appear to be elegant.

Is there easy access to a Migros or Coop in Zurich or Lenzburg proper? I won't have tons of free time and only public transport.

There is a Coop 2 minutes' walk away from Lenzburg railway station.

There is a Migros on the lower level of Zurich main railway station, a Coop just across the street from the station's side entrance and a Sprüngli inside the station on the main floor.

You would have to try VERY hard to miss all of these stores.

Just to be more specific, Migros and Coop are the two main supermarket chains in Switzerland, and both of them have an IMMENSE chocolate aisle in every store.

And while you're at Migros or Coop, pick up some packages of fondue. They are very good and cheaper than in the US. Don't bring it as a carry-on though.

I confess to buying vacuum packages of rösti, when they are on sale. Not as good as the real thing, but so much easier.

schuler & kerouac - I'm another who brings back the vacuum packages of rösti (mit speck!) and the pre-packaged fondue. Gobs and gobs.

turnip, are you going thru the Zurich airport? If so, you can buy chocolate there on the level with the food court. There's a chocolate shop as well as a grocery store which has a big supply.

Sprüngli, definitely!!!

I live in Lenzburg. We buy our "everyday" chocs from Migros and CoOp. Denner also have Lindt, and are usually a bit cheaper than CoOp. For special chocolates, I go to Sprungli or Tuescher in ZH. You might like the champagne truffe from Teuscher, they're excellent. http://www.teuscher.com

Teuscher have a few stores in ZH, one is on the Bahnhofstr, just past Bally, there's also one inside Jelmoli, and another (Cafe Schober),
is in the old town just opposite Schwarzenbach (tea, dried fruit place). The address is Napfgasse 4, just continue walking along the Niederdorfstr., going from central towards Bellvue.

Schober is also a nice place to have a hot chocolate. They were renovating, and I'm not sure if they're done yet.

DW and I toured the Frye Chocolate museum last year and after facing and tasting a huge bowl of samples made our purchases to bring home with us. Now we buy Frye in Target, and Lindt in Walmart.
