Chinese new year festivities in Paris

As you all know, Chinese new year is tomorrow and the various Asian districts of Paris will be parading and dancing as usual, as well as setting off a phenomenal amount of (illegal) firecrackers.

In the 3rd arrondissement, there will be a parade on January 28 starting at Place de la République at 2pm and going through the following streets: Temple, Bretagne, Turbigo, Beaubourg.

The Belleville parade at the interesection of the 10th, 11th, 19th & 20th arrondissements has not yet received its official permit, but January 29th would be a wise guess in my opinion. The parade starts at 10:30am and at 3pm there will be a display of traditional dances and martial arts at metro Belleville.

The big parade in the 13th arrondissement will not take place until February 5th at 1pm. This extravaganza leaves from avenue d'Ivry (in front of the Tang Frères supermarket) and goes up avenue de Choisy to Place d'Italie followed by avenue d'Italie to rue de Tolbiac, back to avenue de Choisy and then boulevard Masséna and back to the avenue d'Ivry starting point. It draws a really huge crowd, so it is best to get there early.

One of the most pleasant aspects of the festivities is that "anybody can be Chinese" and I am not talking about just the local Vietnamese, Laotians, Cambodians and Thais -- you will see many blond, brown and black faces wearing the Chinese costumes and doing the steps that they have carefully rehearsed along with their "real" Chinese friends.

Just for the record, this will be the year of the cock.

Christmas decorations where still up in many parts of both Lyon and Paris last week, and now the Chinese/Lunar New Year, the Year of the Rooster, continues the holiday season. Lucky if you're able to be there to enjoy the events.

Thank you for the update, kerouac.
I see your thread just in time for the parade tomorrow.

Bumped into this old post for 2017 Chinese Lunar New Year, and we are going to celebrate the 2018 New Year soon.

This summer I spent a week in Paris with my family. I am a translator and had a chance to visit Europe for an International language forum. The city is great, as beautiful as it is supposed to be. Didn't know there are some many Chinese residents.

Are there going to be any parades for the 2018 New Year in town?

Yes, there always are. The exact dates of the parades have not yet been set, since this must be done in coordination with the municipal authorities. Since the new year begins on 16 February 2018, you can expect most of the events to take place on the preceding and following weekends.

I haven't done a video about it for a few years, but here is an old one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34wjkQZYYS8

Thanks for sharing the video. The event looks quite hilarious and colorful. You know what, we don't even really see these kinds of parades here in China nowadays, at least not in big cities... Amused! Lol...
