Children in Alsace-Lorraine
We have a chance to spend a couple of weeks in Nancy with 2 children, ages 10 and 12, this summer. What do you suggest in Nancy or nearby of interest to the children?

A little distant, but I would think that the Chateau de Haut-Koeningsbourg is worth the drive (25-45 minutes south of Strasbourg) near St. Hippolyte.

Best wishes,

Rex
Thanks, Rex. I can't find it in my France guidebook...is it in Germany?? Sorry, but I'm still trying to just master the region.
|
No, in France (Strasbourg is in France) - - tohugh it was built by Germans when Alsace (Elsass) was German.

Use mappy.com or viamichelin.com or shellgeostar.com to see about getting there from Nancy. If they'd like old cars, there's a phenomenal museum in Colmar also (a bit further south, even). Good for about an hour.
Agree with Rex, the Chateau de Haut-Koenigsbourg is a wonderful place and the kids will enjoy it. It is not well known on the "tourist circuit", but I did read that within France it is one of the top, if not the top, attractions for the French people.

Some info here:http://www.castles.org/castles/Europe/Western_Europe/France/france111.htm

More info here:http://stronghold.heavengames.com/history/cw/cw4

Also, to get there see this page which has a small map:http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/jsp/mag200109/art/html/sug_tandem_gb.jsp

The castle is just south and west of Selestat. As a point of interest, on the road up to the top of the mountain, there is a good little cafe/bistro (sorry can not recall name) that has good food and drink (and absolutley no English spoken).

Thanks so much! I've printed the info and will get on the web right away...sounds like a treasure.

You're welcome.
Hope that your trip is wonderful ... it's a beautiful area of France.

For Alsace, try using the following site for some information: http://www.visit-alsace.com/home_ang.html
It's a little cutesy, but helpful and easy to use. Your kids might like it, too.

Not sure how you are with the French language, but here's a site: http://www.monum.fr/visitez/decouvrir/indexd.dml?lang=fr&id=1

Peggy,
If you have a car, we drove to Verdun, the site of WWI Memorials and enjoyed touring the area, esp. the underground bunkers where the soldiers lived. They would probably enjoy seeing the WW1 stuff. I don't remember how far Nancy is from Verdun as we were staying at Colmar and drove from there and back the same day.

Thanks to all! You've been so helpful! We will definitely do Haut-Konigsbourg and Verdun. Do you know of any interesting WWII sites near Nancy? I'm also thinking a day trip to Luxumbourg might be a good idea.
