Child on trains -tix?
 

I can't find on the trenitalia site whether our 4 year old will need a tix or not? Does anyone know where I can find this out?

I don't usually buy my 4 year old a train ticket as she seats with me. However, you can tell them you have a 4 year old child and see what they say. Sometimes, dependent on the ticket counter attendant, they will charge you or not. Also, your child will be free on all busses, subways, metros, etc. as well as most (if not all) museum entrances. Italians love bambini and that is why I love bella Italia! :)

I am going to be travelling with 5-yr old twins. I wanted to reserve my seats on trenitalia.it - but I am facing a similar dilemma - whether to buy them tickets or not. I am hearing many versions of this - some say that children pay 50%, others say it is free.
On trenitalia.it, there is no category where you can buy children ticket separately.
Please share more info if anyone has it.

Not knowing the exact policy of the Italian Railways, the universal rule in Europe seems to be that kids under 4 travel free IF they don't occupy their own seat - if they do they buy a child's ticket, usually 50% for 4-11 ages. If you want to make a reservation for a 3 yr old you may have to buy a child's ticket as they'll be occupying their own seat. Whether or not conductors will ask for proof of under 4 is hard to say, many probably will not.

I travelled with my grandson in 2003, he was 9 years old then, the only thing that I paid was the seat reservations fees, otherwise children travel free.
We took many trains because we started our trip in Rome, travelled all over Italy by train and finished our trip in France.

pg, I do not pre-buy my train tickets, they are always available at the time of travel (even on ES and reservation trains). I don't think you need to worry in advance about it. I would wait until you are there to purchase tickets for your twins. As aforementioned, they may even go free, if not, reduced.
