chihuly over venice

Two years ago or so, David Chihuly hung magnificent glass chandeliers/sculptures over the canals of Venice. I know a bunch of them ended up in American museums, but did any remain in Venice?

Hi,

I have a friend who is RABID about him. I'll check with her and get back to you.

I think his name is Dale though (for others who may want to help too)

Beth

well,

for what it is worth (haven't talked to my friend yet though) - there is a website. www.chihuly.com

I have no idea how recent it is (it could be out of date), but there is a map of the locations of these chandeliers/other artwork on the site.

what a great tip Elvira! something to check out when I get there...

Beth

Dale Chihuly's installations usually are dismantled and dispersed, or, as with the wonderful installation this year in Jerusalem, many of the pieces are ephemeral (like blocks of ice at the foot of the city walls). In the case of the "Over Venice" show, some of the pieces are evidently touring - there are "Chuhily Over Venice" exhibits scheduled in Milwaukee and Nashville in 2001 and 2002. In Europe this year there's a show in Monte Carlo and next year at the V & A in London.

Venice it's not, but plan on visiting the Chihuly Museum when it opens in a couple of years in Tacoma. You can see a lot of his pieces in various places in Seattle, or a (somewhat overdone IMO) enormous collection of his "Persians" on the ceiling of the reception area at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. Not to be confused with anything Venetian; that's another hotel a half mile up the strip.

Thanks all, and I apologize for the brain fart - have NO idea why I typed 'David'. Beth, I did find the Chihuly sites on the web, but no mention was made where all the sculptures from the Venice Exhibition are now housed (some in Kemper, then the tours, but I couldn't tell if the tours were from the Kemper collection, or others).

I got hooked on Chihuly over Venice when I saw the PBS show on the project, and immediately fantasized about becoming a glass blower/artisan. That lasted about 30 seconds until I realized I have no artistic talent and fire was involved.

Thanks, John, for the heads up on the new museum in Tacoma - I know the Bellagio is selling off its artworks; are the Chihulys going too?

I doubt if they'd sell the ceiling over the reception desk, but it's Vegas so who knows? Perhaps they could double-deck the space to add more room for "Jeopardy" or "Wheel of Fortune" slot machines, where, presumably, one can use quarters to buy vowels.

Elvira,
We stayed at the Bellagio in April and one of the reasons was we wanted to see the Chihuly ceiling. It is truly amazing! We too got interested in his work after seeing the PBS documentary.
