Chichester, UK
My daughter has a chance to enter a master's degree program near Chichester. Is there anything wonderful about this area? Anyone been there?
|
Lots of absolutely wonderful things.
A short list would include: Arundel Castle several Roman sites the Weald and Downland musem Goodwood (house and race course) Portsmouth the New Forest/Beaulieu/Buckler's Hard Isle of Wight Winchester Salisbury/Stonehenge all of the south coast and on and on . . . . . . . . |
On one of our many trips to the UK we happened to stop off in Chichester and found it to be a nice small city and one we have fond memories of. While walking around a side street and enjoying ice cream cones we came across workmen remodeling an old home .. after exchanging a few friendly words as they moved some wood out of the way on the sidewalk we were given a tour of the place as they proudly showed off all that had been done. Actually, it turned out to be a highlight of our trip.
I think your daughter will enjoy Chichester - it convenient to many sights as janis has listed, but it is also about 50 min. by train from London so she will have an opportunity to get into the city and see the sights there as well. |
Well said janisj. I have fond memories of walking the south Downs. Arundel is great, as well as the villages around it. Tell your daughter to go to the Black Rabbit in Arundel - wonderful pub.
And of course so close to so much else as the others have said. She's a lucky girl. |
Thanks for all the encouragement. I can't wait to check out the area.

All good stuff suggested so far. I’d add…The Minerva Theatre and Fishbourne Roman Palace. There is also a school there called the Bishop Otter College. Bishop Otter. That’s going to take some beating.
It’s a nice sussex cathedral city with a pleasant atmosphere. Gets a bit fighty at night – but that’s most of England. |
I grew up about 8 miles from Chichester and it's a really great location. Beautiful medium sized cathedral town, with a pedestrianized town center, decent shops. Railway station will get you to just about anywhere you would want to go in including London. Also has a decent local theater. TONS of history around the area, great hiking, beaches close by.. Does your daughter have any specific interests?

We stayed in the little town of Bosham. It was really a cute little place not far from Chichester. We spent a day at the historic Port in Portsmouth and enjoyed it greatly, especially HMS Victory. I love the South Downs countryside.
