Chianti region vs Montalcino in Tuscany
Hi,
I am spending 5 nights in Tuscany early October. I am torn between staying in Montalcino or the Chianti region. I like the idea of staying at a Agriturismo. Any recommendations as to which town to stay in and where?
Thank you so much,
Ann

Montalcino gets my vote and La Crociona Agritourismo is wonderful. We stayed there for a few nights last August and loved it. October will be their high season so you may have trouble booking for less than a week. They have a website and you can send them an inquiry. good luck!

The Val d'Orcia is perhaps the most attractive area of Tuscany and that's where Montalcino is. We stayed here for a week... http://www.larasina.it

apirone,
I would stay in southern Tuscany to see Siena, Pienza, Montepulciano, Bagno Vignoni, Sant Antimo, Monte Oliveto Maggiore, Buonconvento, Murlo, Montalcino. I would stay in Chianti area to see San Gimignano, Volterra, Greve, Radda, Castellina,Siena.
If you want ideas for this area feel free to e-mail me

The countryside is very different - Chianti is green with steep hills, Montalcino has the classic Tuscan view of wheat fields and Cypress trees. The wine is also very different Brunello is widely regarded as the best red from Italy.IMO in the world but the mix of the countryside and wine gives me a strong bias

IMO the Chianti area is more difficult to do day trips from than Montalcino and southern Tuscany. Chianti has its own appeal however and plenty of small towns, wineries and villages to visit but only a couple of main roads so you tend to repeat drives. Montalcino is easier to go in any direction including chianti. I vote for southern Tuscany in October.
Have fun and good luck in your research.
