Chianti recommendations
 

Does anyone have any hotel/inn recommendations for the Chianti region? <BR>thanks!

Went last fall and stayed 4 glorious days at the Villa Vignamaggio. This is a 15th century villa and working winery. Not cheap ($180-$220/night) but well worth the $$ -- beautiful grounds and gardens, friendly staff, gorgeously renovated rooms (ask to stay in the old servant quarters, newer and brighter than the main house, which was fine, too!), two pools, free estate wine, etc., etc. They have a website (sorry I don't have the address handy, but a search should reveal) and you can reserve on-line (we did with no problem).

Although we didn't stay there, I did stop in and have a look at the Hotel Belvedere San Leonino. It is between Castellina in Chianti and Siena, just off of the 222, in the midst of the vineyards. A very beautiful place! Their web site is: http://www.hotelsanleonino.com. <BR> <BR>Collelungo is just outside of Castellina, on the way towards Radda. Their web site is: http://www.collelungo.com. <BR> <BR>There are also apartments at the Rocca della Macie vineyards. I've been to the vineyard (south of Castellina), but not seen the apartments. Lynn, We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Locanda le Piazze in Castellina. It took our breath away!

Stayed just south of Siena (20 mts) last September at a beautiful hilltop hotel called Borgo Pretale. There are several buildings, each room beautifully decorated with private terrace overlooking vineyards. Takes 6 mts. to drive up the hill before you reach the villa, so lots of privacy. Beautifully secluded pool, tennis courts, massage/workout room, trails, gorgous restaurant w/nice menu - fantastic service overall.

We stayed at Collelungo in 1998. The rooms and grounds are lovely, but it is an apartment-type arrangement, not a hotel or inn. So there is no restaurant and you really can't walk into town from there. Also, you are expected to get your own additional supplies of things like toilet paper after the initial supply is used. You may love it, but again, it may not be the type of accomodation that you are looking for.
