Chex Mix Assistance
I realize this falls in line with some of the sillier questions asked on a travel forum but thought you smart people could help.
I sent over a treat that I made for some friends in London called a Christmas mix. It is various chex mix cereals, peanuts, pretzels, m&m's - covered in white chocolate. Apparently it was a big hit and they want the recipe. When I explained it, they didn't know what chex mix was and didn't think they had it there. Does anyone know if they have this cereal over there? I'm hoping it exists in the area and that it's my friends that are lacking in cereal knowledge. And since I am prepared for the "and what does this have to do with travel question," here are some possibilities: 1. The Christmas mix itself TRAVELED from Florida to London. 2. If Chex Mix isn't there, I might have to TRAVEL to London with some boxes. 3. TRAVELING is FUN with Chex mix. Ok, that's all. Thanks in advance. :) |
coldwar, I have no idea how to reply to your post, but I love your chutzpah! I'm sure you'll get an answer (or two) here!

And "Chez Max" is a restaurant in London! Best wishes, Rex |
I know the "Chex Mix"Queen of the USA ! Let me ask her!!!!
|
lol...
|
Ok, so you're telling us that these Brits just gobbled this stuff up without looking at it? And none is left. They didn't say "oh look, it has peanuts and pretzels and <Britsh for Chex> and M&Ms and ... Brilliant!". And about your explanation of how this is travel related, I am suspicious. How do you know that #3 is true if the Chex mix traveled solo? |
|
mrwunrfl - I have previously travelled with Chex Mix. I declare, under penalty of perjury, that the foregoing reason no. 3 is true and correct!
|
My brother works for an airline. In the bid-ness the accumulation of M&M's, pretzel bits, hair, peanuts and lint that accumulates between the seat cushions is called "trail mix." :-D
|
ewwwwwwwww
|
See, no need to make it yourself! When you flight arrives in London, just help the clean-up crew.
Yeck! |
(giggle gag giggle)
|
LOl, I guess it does travel
|
Looks like this is travel related after all!
|
Ok I admit #3 looks suspicious but I assure you I have traveled with chex mix in previous trips and it IS fun. Try it!
You guys are on a roll with this one! Chez Max and trail mix? I love it! |
I think Shreddies may be a UK equivalent to Chex cereals.
And Smarties might work instead of the M&M's. But you know, I really think you should just make your friends another big batch of your Christmas mix and deliver it in person. :-)) |
By Jove, I think we've got it, thanks to starspinners. The following definitions come from a British to American translation guide: Shreddies (breakfast cereal) n : similar to Chex and Kellogg?s Crispix. shreddies sl n : manky or revolting men?s (boy?s) pants. |

I have travelled with chex mix many times - on one trip to Mexico I would have starved without the chex mix and chocolate chip cookies we took.
Have you tried chex mix with the Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mix instead of the chex recipe? It's real good. You gather your "trail mix" from the airline seats and put in a bowl. Mix the dry HVR dressing mix with oil and garlic powder and chili powder. Mix together and poor over "trail mix" and bake like the chex recipe. Way better than the worcestershire recipe. |
Then would this be a ChezShreddieSmartie Mix? |
Brilliant!

Thanks for the websites. I sent an e-mail to the good people at Chex Mix to see if they do indeed sell the product in London. I was quite impressed with the site = they have all kinds of gift ideas. It's amazing what they come up with. I know people are waiting impatiently with the anticipation of their response so I will keep you informed.
I thought of some more traveled related chex mix statements/questions 1. What hotel in Paris would consider serving Chex Mix? 2. Would Pup like Chex Mix? 3. Which area of London would you probably find people who like Chex Mix? Covent Garden or South Kensington? 4. Can you eat Chex Mix on the Eurostar? 5. Chex mix doesn't always travel well in moneybelts. |
I don't know about where in London, but on the Isle of Man the cats enjoy
Chex Manx |
If you want to mix with Czechs, you should travel to Prague.
|
Boooooooo!
|
I adore chex mix, and know why too much about cereal selections in London. Shreddies are similar to wheat chex but have a slight malted taste. I have yet to find corn chex. Crispex is sold in London, but it is much much sweeter than the US. A health food store MIGHT have a corn cereal that would work well. YUM!
|
I almost hate to post this reply, but since your British friends thought your mix was so fab, would you mind sharing your recipe? See, I told you I almost hated to post the reply! But really, I'm serious, would you share your recipe? I'd like to try it out on my folks here at Chez Moi. (I'd insert a smiley face here, but I'm not into emoticons - LOL)
|
Sorry forgot one thing- I thought everyone was against travelers' chex on this site.
|
Must Chex be checked or will the TSA allow it to be in your carry on luggage? ;-)

As requested, the Christmas Mix recipe. It was given by a student at our school three years ago. She made the mix for all of the teachers and gave us the receipe card.
Joanna's Christmas Mix Melt 1 pound of white chocolate in the microwave. In a larger container mix, 1 cup of salted peanuts, 1 cup of M&Ms, 1 cup of pretzels, 1 cup of Cheerios, 2 cups of Rice Chex, 2 cups of Corn Chex, 2 cups of Wheat Chex. Pour the melted white chocolate over the dry mixture. Blend and let set. Break apart and enjoy. Note: I do not make it with Cheerios - you can vary as you like. |
Thanks for posting the recipe! I have already copied it down and will be making it for my children to give their teachers as a Valentine happy. I will be using the Valentine M&Ms mix. I will make it again at Easter and use the Easter colors M&Ms. And when Christmas rolls around, I will use the red and green M&M's.
Now you fellow Fodorite's are inspiring my culinary pursuits as well as my travel adventures! Thanx! |
Oh my, let me Grammar Police myself - it should be fellow "Fodorites" not Fodorite's! As an English teacher, the misuse of apostrophe "s" is one of my pet peeves! Can you ever forgive me?
|
highledge: you have made me laugh long and hard - thank you for the traveler's chex quip....
|
Let me start by saying I ADORE Chex Mix!! And not that pre-packaged crap -- it's gotta be ho-made. I'm living in France and have only found honey-flavored Crispix, which I can only assume is all wrong for the original garlicky worscheshirey tasty treat. Alas, if anyone knows where to buy this stuff let me know. Meanwhile, I was back in Cal for Chex-mas and my Mom had it waiting for me. I'm ashamed to admit how much of that I ate over a three day period!
|
Note to Crepes - we could make some serious cash Xporting Chex to the Euro Zone I think. Not that I am promoting a business because that would be against policies around here. Just thinking out loud.
Babette: Ho-made or homemade? That might take this thread to a totally different level. I think I'm just reading into things. I will be in Paris in April maybe I should set up a stand to sell the stuff on the Champs Elysees? :) |
